The Supreme Court will address the rape and murder case involving a postgraduate medic from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The matter, being heard as a suo motu case, is scheduled as the first item on the Court’s agenda at 10:30 a.m. A Bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is set to review the case.
The case, officially titled “In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and related issue,” gains particular importance as the Calcutta High Court has already intervened and transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In related news, a second-year B.Com student was arrested by the Central Division of the Kolkata Police on Monday, August 19, 2024. The student is accused of posting threatening messages about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and revealing the victim’s identity. The police described the posts as “provocative,” potentially inciting “social unrest and promoting hatred.” The student was presented in court the same day.
