Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has reported significant growth in Oman’s marine tourism and ports sector, issuing 133 licenses for marine tourism trips from January to August this year. The ministry also highlighted a surge in activity, with more than 450 yachts and over 4,700 pleasure boats docking at the country’s tourist piers, attracting more than 800,000 passengers.
Oman is witnessing an expansion in its marine tourism infrastructure, with 8 companies managing and operating tourist jetties across key governorates such as Muscat, Musandam, Dhofar, and South Al Batinah. In Muscat alone, 5 major piers, including those at Saraya Bandar Al Jissah and Marina Bandar Al Rawdha, are welcoming tourists. These piers serve as gateways for tourists exploring Oman’s pristine waters, offering services such as boat rentals, yacht charters, and diving trips.
In addition to boosting tourism, the MTCIT has been focusing on the quality and safety of Oman’s ports. The ministry has signed concession agreements with international companies to manage and operate ports, ensuring international security standards and operational efficiency. Investments in these ports have spurred a qualitative leap, aligning them with global specifications.
The ministry has also issued 5 new licenses to operate commercial docks, focusing on regions like South Al Sharqiyah and Musandam. These docks have handled over 12 million tons of cargo, underscoring the strategic importance of Oman’s ports in both commercial and tourism sectors.
Further investments are on the horizon, including plans to develop Shannah and Masirah ports and a new yacht berth in Quriyat. The MTCIT is also studying the feasibility of establishing green technology-based ship recycling centers.
