The two-day training for selected farmers for the ‘Pearl Spot Farming in ponds Training Programme’, part of the Subhiksha Kerala project implemented by the Department of Fisheries to ensure food security in the state, will begin on August 6.
This is a project to scientifically cultivate the fish in ponds of 50 cents. The unit cost of the farming scheme implemented in collaboration with the Local Self Government Department is Rs.1.5 lakh. About 40 per cent of this will be provided by the government as grant.
The scheme aims at ensuring a sustainable income for the farmers as well as providing the state pearl spot on demand. Training will be imparted to the inland fishermen who depend on Ashtamudi Lake in Kollam district for the pearl spot seed production programme on the farms organised by the Department of Fisheries.
The project is being implemented online in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic. The training programme will be attended by 250 selected fish farmers from 28 centres in various parts of the state. In addition, other farmers and the general public have the opportunity to watch the event live on Facebook and ask questions. Experts from the Department of Fisheries and the University of Fisheries will take classes.
