COVID-19: 44,879 new cases, India tally past 87 lakh

Coronavirus cases in India climbed to over 87.28 lakh after the country reported a single-day spike of 44,878 infections, according to the Union Health ministry. With the fresh cases reported in a span of 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 tally has reached at 87,28,795.

India’s death toll due to the Covid-19 infection has also mounted to 128,688 after 547 coronavirus positive patients succumbed to the disease. India currently has 484,547 active cases of coronavirus after a decrease of 4,747 in the last 24 hours.

Of the 87,28,795 total coronavirus cases, 81,15,580 have recovered. A total of 49,079 patients were discharged, the Union health ministry said.

According to India’s top medical research body that is overseeing the country’s pandemic management strategy, a cumulative total of 12 crore samples have been tested so far with 11,39,230 samples being tested on November 12.

Highest Covid-related fatalities were reported from Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala – 60 per cent of India’s daily fatality count.

Globally, the novel coronavirus disease has infected more than 5 crore people since its outbreak in China last December. Viral outbreaks have since forced countries to enforce multiple lockdowns to control the novel coronavirus which has killed almost 13 lakh people.

The United States, world’s worst affected country with a fifth of all cases worldwide, has been recording more than one lakh cases for the past week; more than 2.5 lakh people died of COVID-19.
