5,142 people confirmed with COVID-19 in Kerala on Jan 8

COVID-19 has been confirmed for 5,142 people in Kerala on January 8. The district-wise break-up of the number of infected are Ernakulam 708, Thrissur 500, Kozhikode 469, Kottayam 462, Pathanamthitta 433, Malappuram 419, Kollam 377, Alappuzha 341, Thiruvananthapuram 313, Idukki 301, Palakkad 267, Kannur 249, Wayanad 238 and Kasaragod 65.
The infection was confirmed in the last 24 hours for three people from the UK. With this, COVID-19 has so far been confirmed for 50 people who recently came from the UK. Their samples have been sent to NIV Pune for further testing. A total of six people were diagnosed with the genetically modified virus.

During the last 24 hours, 59,569 samples were tested. The test positivity rate is 8.63. A total of 83,44,963 samples have so far been sent for testing, including LAMP and antigen testing. It has been confirmed that 23 deaths in the last few days were due to COVID-19. This brings the total death toll to 3,257. Further deaths will be confirmed after NIV testing in Alappuzha.

Eighty-eight of those diagnosed with the disease are from outside the State and 4,563 people were infected through contact. Contact source for 424 is not clear. Ernakulam 644, Thrissur 479, Kozhikode 436, Kottayam 429, Pathanamthitta 371, Malappuram 398, Kollam 369, Alappuzha 331, Thiruvananthapuram 219, Idukki 293, Palakkad 98, Kannur 205, Wayanad 230 and Kasaragod 61 were affected by the disease.
The disease affected 67 health workers. Pathanamthitta 20, Ernakulam 10, Kollam, Thrissur 6 each, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur 5 each, Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod 4 each, Idukki and Wayanad 1 each were affected by the disease.

The test results of 5,325 people who were diagnosed and treated were negative. Thiruvananthapuram 307, Kollam 323, Pathanamthitta 728, Alappuzha 366, Kottayam 545, Idukki 99, Ernakulam 686, Thrissur 366, Palakkad 207, Malappuram 569, Kozhikode 574, Wayanad 126, Kannur 318 and Kasaragod 111 tested negative today. With this, 64,236 people have been diagnosed with the disease and are still undergoing treatment. 7,33,384 have so far been freed from Kovid.
There are currently 1,98,270 people under surveillance in various districts of the State. Of these, 1,87,104 are under home / institutional quarantine and 11,166 in hospitals. A total of 1,301 people were admitted to hospitals.
There are three new hotspots. The new hotspots are Matathur in Thrissur district (Cantonment zone ward 9), Malayalapuzha in Pathanamthitta district (sub ward 7) and Thottappuzhassery (sub wards 1, 2 and 6). Nine areas are excluded from the hotspot. With this, there are currently a total of 440 hotspots.
