Sharjah: In a focused initiative to deter begging in the emirate, the Sharjah Police have launched a campaign to raise awareness that it is a crime.
The campaign, which is out to combat negative social behaviours during Ramadan, is being conducted by the Security Media Department in collaboration with strategic partners.
Colonel Dr. Mohammed Bati Al Hajari, Director of the Security Media Department, said begging becomes a particularly prevalent issue during Ramadan. This is because some individuals take advantage of the community’s heightened sense of compassion and generosity during this holy period, using deceptive methods to manipulate public sympathy and collect money through illegal means.
Colonel Al Hajari stressed that the campaign would continue until the end of Eid Al-Fitr, and the police are actively working to monitor and address such activities. Specialised teams have been prepared to detect and apprehend those engaged in begging and other illicit activities, ensuring that legal measures are taken against offenders.
The campaign also emphasises the importance of donating through recognised and official channels.
Colonel Al Hajari urged members of the community to be cautious and avoid falling victim to beggars who take advantage of people’s goodwill. He encouraged the public to contribute to charitable causes through authorised organisations.
The Sharjah Police has also taken steps to enhance its efforts in raising awareness by increasing its presence on social media platforms. By using these platforms to share crucial information, the police aim to combat begging and other forms of exploitation, ultimately promoting a safer and more harmonious society.
Colonel Al-Hajari further encouraged residents to cooperate with the police by reporting any instances of begging or illegal activity. The public can report such cases via the police’s dedicated helplines at 901 or 80040.
