UAE Tightens Drone Cybersecurity Guidelines

Abu Dhabi : The UAE has announced stricter cybersecurity guidelines for drone operations. The new framework was introduced by the UAE Cybersecurity Council in collaboration with Reach Digital and Shield Works, companies with expertise in digital transformation and cybersecurity innovation.

The primary goals of these new regulations are to:

  • Strengthen national defense against cyber threats,
  • Support secure digital transformation, and
  • Establish the UAE as a global hub for advanced ideas and technology.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of UAE Cybersecurity, stated that these strict standards will help ensure the safe operation of drones across government, commercial, and industrial sectors. With drones being increasingly used in sectors like security, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and logistics, he emphasized the need to secure airspace boundaries, infrastructure, and data integrity.

This move reflects the UAE’s commitment to advancing its digital and cybersecurity infrastructure. It also introduces new regulations for drone service companies, requiring them to:

  • Obtain a license to operate drones within UAE airspace,
  • Undergo proper training,
  • Meet quality and safety standards.

As drone usage expands for travel, cargo transport, and other purposes, these controls are necessary. Even individuals flying drones for recreational purposes must register via the UAE Drones mobile application and obtain a service and training certificate from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Operators must comply with all GCAA regulations, even when providing services for commercial, humanitarian, or life-saving purposes. Violations of these laws can result in penalties ranging from 6 months to 5 years imprisonment, fines up to AED 100,000, or both.
