HOUSTON:
Stafford’s first Malayali mayor was sworn in by another Malayali mayor. Early in June this year the Stafford City Hall witnessed a historic and emotional moment. The small American town called of Stafford, ruled only by whites until then, had a brown man as its first citizen.
It was a moment that would be etched in history books. This is because Mr. Ken Mathew was elected as the new mayor of Stafford. Ken Mathew was sworn in by the neighboring Missouri City Mayor Mr. Robin Ilakat, another Keralite.
At five o’clock on Tuesday evening, the City Hall was overflowing with a crowd of Indians, African Americans, Hispanics, and others to witness the ceremony. Stafford Mayor Cecil Willis presided over this special meeting of the City Council.
