Air India Crash: Former Oman-Based Nurse Among Victims

Ahmedabad : Ranjitha Gopakumar Nair, a long-time expatriate and former staff nurse at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, Oman, has been identified among the victims of the Air India Flight AI171 crash, which claimed the lives of all 242 passengers and crew on board. The flight was en route to London and crashed just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, marking one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in recent years.

Originally from Pullad in Thiruvalla, Kerala, Ranjitha had served under Oman’s Ministry of Health for nine years, where she earned a reputation for her dedication and compassion while working in Salalah. She had been on an extended leave from Kozhencherry Government Hospital in Kerala, where she was previously employed, to work abroad and support her family’s dreams—especially the construction of their family home.

Having relocated to the United Kingdom a year ago in search of better career opportunities, Ranjitha was on her way back to India to complete professional license renewal procedures when tragedy struck.

Her sudden and tragic passing has sent shockwaves through the expatriate Malayali community in Oman and the UK, where she was known as a committed healthcare professional and a devoted family woman.
