Dubai: Ahmed Zainoun, a Moroccan who supports children whose lives are shattered by a rare genetic condition, was crowned the Arab Hope Maker of 2025, the Arab world’s most prestigious honour for philanthropists.
He was crowned the winner of the fifth edition of the initiative in Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Sunday.
Sheikh Mohammed also declared the other two finalists, Khadija El Qorti and Samar Nadem, as winners and ordered to reward all three winners with Dh1million each.
Congratulating the winners, Sheikh Mohammed said: “The Hope Makers initiative embodies noble giving, inspiring Arab youth to be active in their communities, overcome challenges, and spread goodness.”
Serving ‘Children of the Moon’
The top winner, Ahmed Zainoun, was selected through a live audience poll for his efforts in raising awareness about “children of the Moon,” who suffer from Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP). This rare genetic disorder makes individuals highly sensitive to UV light, causing severe skin damage and a high risk of cancer.
“These children are completely ignored. They cannot see the light, and we are working hard to raise awareness,” Ahmed said. His initiative provides protective gear to affected children. His emotional story of a child abandoned by his father moved the audience to tears.
Haven for cancer patients
Khadija El Qorti from Morocco, another winner, transformed her home into a shelter for cancer patients after losing her husband to the disease. “I believe in Allah, and He helps them,” she said from her wheelchair. Her shelter provides food, care, and transport, offering hope to those in need.
Hope for abandoned women
Egypt’s Samar Nadeem, known as the “Flower of Egypt,” dedicates her work to sheltering women abandoned by their families. She has cared for many, including a former TV station manager left destitute. “Imagine being abandoned by your own son with nowhere to go,” she said tearfully. She aims to expand her project to support more women in need.
All winners expressed gratitude to Sheikh Mohammed for highlighting their efforts. A video showcased how past winners’ recognition has changed lives across the Arab world.
The event at Coca-Cola Arena featured performances by Arab artists Hamood Al Khuder, Walid Al Shami, Balqees, and Omar Al Abdallat. International music producer RedOne also took the stage, adding a global touch to the celebration.
