Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is taking significant strides in enhancing road safety by developing a comprehensive smart traffic monitoring system powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, according to Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Salim Al Falahi, Director General of Traffic.
The initiative aims to identify high-risk driving behavior and recurring accident patterns, aligning with global road safety standards. The ultimate goal is to reduce traffic accidents by encouraging better driver conduct.
Brigadier Al Falahi outlined the most common traffic violations, including speeding and running red lights. He explained that the ROP implements a traffic points system for repeat offenders, where accumulated violations result in progressive legal actions such as:
- Temporary license suspension
- Mandatory driving qualification courses
- Administrative vehicle impoundment
- And eventual license cancellation
He emphasized the effectiveness of automated systems, such as 24/7 surveillance cameras, in accurately recording traffic violations with time-stamped data and images. However, he also stressed the continued need for human monitoring, especially in areas not covered by electronic systems or during unpredictable traffic conditions.
Looking ahead, the ROP is working on new smart technology initiatives, inspired by successful international models, to further refine traffic control and improve road safety. This includes ongoing collaboration with relevant authorities to upgrade technical infrastructure and monitoring tools in line with international best practices.
Notably, the ROP’s efforts in leveraging smart technologies and data-driven approaches to improve traffic safety have been internationally recognized, earning the top honour in the Road Safety category at the International Road Federation (IRF) Awards recently.
