Muscat : In a historic moment for the Sultanate, Oman unveiled its tallest flagpole, soaring to an impressive height of 126 metres — roughly equivalent to a 40-storey building — at the newly inaugurated Al Khuwair Square in the Ministries District of Muscat. The flagpole is now the tallest man-made structure in the country, marking a significant symbol of national pride and unity.
The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, and attended by His Excellency Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality.
🇴🇲 Engineering Marvel with Symbolic Significance
Constructed using 135 tonnes of high-grade steel, the flagpole features a tapered design—with a diameter of 2,800 mm at the base narrowing to 900 mm at the top—and is equipped with an aircraft warning light system. The massive Omani flag, measuring 18 metres in length and 31.5 metres in width, is visible from various vantage points across the capital city.
The project stands not only as a monumental engineering feat, but as a symbol of Oman’s unity, progress, and future aspirations.
Al Khuwair Square: A New Landmark for Public Life
The unveiling of the flagpole coincided with the official opening of Al Khuwair Square, a vibrant 18,000-square-metre public space designed to enhance community engagement and urban recreation.
Highlights of the new square include:
- Palm-lined walkways and landscaped gardens
- Dedicated walking and cycling tracks
- A modern skate park
- Outdoor art installations and cultural zones
- Multi-use sports courts and open green spaces
- Public restrooms and parking for over 100 vehicles
The development positions Al Khuwair Square as a dynamic new civic hub in the heart of Muscat, encouraging active lifestyles and cultural interaction.
Public-Private Collaboration
The $10 million project was realized through a strategic partnership with the private sector and was fully funded by Jindal Steel Sohar, demonstrating a successful model of corporate contribution to national development initiatives.
With the new flagpole towering over the cityscape and Al Khuwair Square set to become a vibrant focal point for residents and visitors alike, Oman continues to blend tradition and modernity in its evolving urban identity.
