Domestic Workers Must Be Hired Only Through Licensed Agencies: UAE Warns Against Fake Recruiters

Abu Dhabi/Dubai : The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has reiterated that domestic workers must only be hired through authorized and licensed recruitment agencies. Hiring through unlicensed or fake agencies poses significant risks to both employers and workers, the ministry cautioned.

To ensure the protection of rights for both domestic workers and their sponsors, recruitment must be done strictly via approved channels. If issues arise after hiring, employers can request a replacement through the same agency.

The ministry warned that workers recruited through unauthorized means often lack proper medical screenings and background checks, and there are no binding employment contracts in place. This increases the risk of workers absconding or being involved in legal complications, for which no legal recourse may be available.

Domestic workers must be employed under the sponsorship of the employer, and contracts are valid for two years. If the employer is unsatisfied during the six-month probation period, the agency is required to provide a replacement. If the agency fails to do so, the employer has the right to reclaim the fees paid and take legal action if necessary.

For those who prefer not to accommodate workers in their homes, domestic help can also be hired on an hourly basis. The ministry also noted that the integration of domestic workers into the Wage Protection System (WPS) has helped reduce salary-related disputes and delays.

Employers are urged to stay alert and avoid falling prey to fraudulent recruitment practices.
