Students in the UAE were taken by surprise when the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared results early on July 13. As many as 78 schools in the UAE are affiliated to the CBSE curriculum, with over 6,000 students in Class 12.
The toppers in UAE are Shealyn Elizabeth Thomas from Gems Our Own English High School, Dubai, with 99% in Commerce; Kishita Gidwani from Indian High School Dubai in Humanities with 99.2%; and Aakrati Sathish Shetty Gems Our Own English High School, Sharjah, in Science with 98.4%.
This year, students from the Commerce and the Humanities streams could not take their last few exams due to lockdown in India due to Covid-19 and the CBSE’s postponement of exams. The board announced the results on the basis of an alternate assessment scheme after the pending exams were cancelled. Marks for the exams not attended by students were awarded on the basis of marks scored in best performing subjects.
Shealyn Elizabeth said she could take only the English and Marketing board exams. The rest of the papers like Home Science, Informatics and Business Studies were postponed on March 18, and hence the results were based on internal assessments.
Indian High School Dubai, which had the highest number of students among all schools in the UAE, at 541, achieved 100 per cent pass in all streams. Kishita Gidwani, its Humanities topper, said she was going to Canada to study Clinical Psychology.
Another school run by the Indian Association, the Sharjah Indian School, produced commendable results too with 90% of its 443 candidates scoring above 60%. The Commerce topper was Devika Raveendran with 96.8% and Science topper was Abdulla Ameen with 96.2%.
Model School in Abu Dhabi, Springdales School Dubai, Gulf Indian High School Dubai and Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah are among the schools that presented a 100% pass percentage. In DPS Dubai, students scored a class average of 90.7 per cent and 100% distinction (above 75 per cent).
In DPS Sharjah 94.7% of students scored distinction. A visually challenged Asma Abbas did the school proud by scoring 87.6%. Kevin Thomas from DPS Sharjah, who was the UAE topper in Grade 10 two years ago, scored 98.4% in the Commerce stream.

Kevin, who is the school and stream topper, told The Gulf Indians that he is very happy with his results: “I was expecting only around 95%. I was able to attend four out of the five Board exams.” Kevin is planning to go to Christ University in Bengaluru to do BCom with CIMA Integrated.
In schools outside India, 94.26 per cent of the 16,043 candidates passed, which is lower by around one per cent compared to last year.
