Sec 144 imposed in Hathras village ahead of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi visit

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will be visiting Hathras to meet the family of the 19-year-old rape victim who passed away on September 29, triggering massive protests across the country and calls for action.

Ahead of Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Hathras, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the district.

Authorities have said more than five people are not allowed to gather in Hathras. Hathras District Magistrate P Lashkar said, “We have no information about Priyanka Gandhi’s visit. The SIT will meet the victim’s family members today and media will not be allowed at the spot.”

A 5-member team of Congress will accompany Priyanka Gandhi for her visit to the Hathras rape victim’s family. The Congress team will comprise Akshya Mourya, Shivram Singh, Ritu Choudhry, Pramod Kumar and Pradeep Narwal in charge of Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress has slammed the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh after the Hathras gangrape victim’s family was allegedly denied the right to properly cremate the body on September 30 as the police cremated her in the middle of the night amid protests by villagers and family members.

Congress has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asks Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to resign.

Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, said, “A daughter of India is raped-murdered, facts are suppressed and in the end, the right to perform the last rites is also taken away from the victim’s family.”

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi said, “I was on the phone with the Hathras victim’s father when he was informed that his daughter had passed away. I heard him cry out in despair.”

“He had just been telling me that all he wanted was justice for his child. Last night the victim’s father was robbed of the chance to take his daughter home for the last time and perform her last rites,” she said in a series of tweets.
