Oman, U.S. trade talks zero in on tariff woes and market access boosts

Muscat: The meeting, held at the OCCI headquarters, brought together key officials and stakeholders from both Oman and the United States to review the current hurdles faced by Omani exporters and importers in fully capitalizing on the FTA provisions. Discussions centered around the customs tariffs imposed by the United States and the need to reconsider their impact on Omani goods entering the U.S. market.

One of the pivotal outcomes of the discussion was the emphasis on the imminent launch of the Omani trade office in the U.S. The office, set to open soon, is expected to play a vital role in enhancing Omani exports, fostering American investments, and promoting two-way trade.

On the sidelines of the meeting, a dedicated workshop brought together exporters, importers, and investors from both nations. Participants exchanged insights on the operational barriers they encounter and proposed strategies to ensure smoother trade flows.
His Excellency Faisal bin Abdullah Al Rawas, Chairman of OCCI, highlighted the strategic value of the FTA, calling it a “critical tool for economic growth and access to new markets.” He reiterated the Chamber’s commitment to identifying and resolving trade challenges and ensuring that the private sector can tap into the full potential of international agreements.

HE Al Rawas stressed the importance of coordinated efforts between government bodies and the private sector to maximize the benefits of the FTA and ensure compliance with global trade standards.

The session was attended by senior U.S. officials, including the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for European and Middle East Affairs and the Director of European and Middle East Affairs from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
