Oman to facilitate temporary work permits for expats during Dhofar Khareef season

MUSCAT : This initiative is designed to streamline the labour market, support businesses in meeting the seasonal surge in demand, and prevent the employment of undocumented expatriate workers.

The Ministry stated that employers and businesses will be granted these temporary permits to bring in expatriate workers specifically for the duration of the Khareef season. This measure aims to provide a legal avenue for businesses to meet the increased need for manpower during this peak tourism period, which, according to data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, saw approximately 1,048,000 visitors between June 21 and September 21, 2024, representing a 9 percent increase compared to the 962,000 visitors in the same period of 2023.

In addition to the work permits, the initiative also aligns with the temporary activities organised by Dhofar Municipality to enhance the region’s services during the peak tourist season. The aim is to ensure the smooth operation of the region’s hospitality, retail, and service sectors as they accommodate the growing number of visitors.

The provision of temporary work permits is also intended to help employers avoid potential violations and penalties associated with hiring illegal workers. This initiative complements the ongoing development of tourism infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate, which has seen the inauguration of several new projects in collaboration between the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Dhofar Municipality, and Omran Group, including viewpoints, waterfront developments, and recreational parks.
