Oman Leads Virtual Preparatory Talks for Seventh UN Environment Assembly

Muscat: Oman hosted a virtual preparatory meeting for the upcoming seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), chaired by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the current session.

The meeting focused on recent developments related to the draft ministerial declaration, which aims to advance sustainable solutions to critical global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste management.

Key discussions also included a draft mechanism for submitting resolutions by UN member states, presented by the Secretariat of the United Nations Environment Assembly, along with guidelines for drafting resolutions to ensure clarity and consistency.

Participants reviewed a concept note for organising a dedicated day for multilateral environmental agreements, aimed at enhancing their effectiveness and improving coordination among stakeholders. The meeting also examined logistical preparations and potential themes for stakeholder dialogues during UNEA-7.

A virtual dialogue session was also held on the sidelines, engaging representatives from major groups and civil society organisations. The session aimed to incorporate diverse perspectives into the decision-making process, ensuring inclusivity and transparency.

The meeting marks a significant step toward strengthening international environmental cooperation and preparing for a successful UNEA-7 session.

The session was attended by ministers, ambassadors, members of the UNEA Executive Bureau, the Executive Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, and Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme.
