Muscat : In a strategic move to enhance governance, support local industries, and maximise the economic value of mineral resources, His Excellency Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, has issued a ministerial decision granting Minerals Development Oman (MDO) exclusive rights to export gypsum and chromite ores.
The decision prioritises the local market for mineral purchases before allowing exports and mandates that exported chromite ore must have a minimum concentration of 30%. A transitional period of one year has been set to ensure smooth implementation.
Key Objectives of the Decision:
- Regulate the domestic minerals market and improve transparency.
- Standardise contracts and marketing specifications.
- Reduce raw material exports while enhancing export quality.
- Strengthen local manufacturing and supply chains.
- Increase the added value of national resources.
The new policy is expected to boost financial returns from mineral resources, attract investment, promote local content, and provide opportunities for small and medium enterprises across the sector.
