Nama Uncovers 3,557 Illegal Electricity Connections Across Oman in 2024

Muscat : Nama Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC), the national utility responsible for electricity distribution across all Omani governorates except Dhofar, has reported uncovering 3,557 illegal electricity connections during 2024, according to its recently released Annual Report.

The detection and removal of these unauthorized connections enabled the recovery of over RO 2 million in lost revenue and 228 GWh of electricity. This crackdown forms part of a wider initiative aimed at reducing technical and non-technical losses in the power distribution system.

As part of its efforts to enhance operational efficiency, NEDC conducted extensive inspections to identify meter tampering, unauthorized access, and faulty electrical installations. These inspections were complemented by improvements in the company’s meter reading processes. A dedicated team was deployed to validate manual readings, and the use of Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology was expanded.

The integration of digital technologies facilitated real-time performance tracking and significantly reduced human error, resulting in improved accuracy and revenue protection.

These initiatives contributed to a measurable reduction in system losses, which declined to 7.95% in 2024 from 8.23% in 2023 — marking a 0.27% improvement year-on-year.

NEDC’s ongoing efforts reflect its commitment to safeguarding electricity infrastructure, promoting responsible energy use, and enhancing service reliability across the Sultanate.
