Kuwait’s population hits 4.9 million, with expats making up more than two-thirds

Dubai: As of December 2024, Kuwait’s population reached approximately 4,987,826, with expatriates comprising about 68.6% (3,419,843 individuals) and Kuwaiti nationals accounting for 31.4% (1,567,983 individuals), according to the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI).
Demographic Breakdown

Among Kuwaiti citizens, women slightly outnumber men, with 794,923 females compared to 773,060 males. In contrast, the overall population skews male, with men constituting approximately 61%, largely due to the influx of male expatriate workers in labor-intensive sectors .

Expatriate Communities

The Indian community remains the largest expatriate group, numbering 1,007,961 individuals, representing about 21% of Kuwait’s total population and 29% of the expatriate segment. Egyptians follow with 657,280 residents, marking a 2% increase from the previous year. Together, Indians and Egyptians constitute nearly half of the expatriate population.
Labor Force Composition

Kuwait’s total workforce stands at approximately 3.06 million, with expatriates making up a significant majority. Specifically, 2.56 million expatriates are employed across various sectors, while Kuwaiti nationals account for 505,000 workers. Kuwaitis predominantly occupy roles in the public sector, such as executive positions, government roles, and education. Conversely, expatriates are largely employed in the private sector, often in domestic services, manual labor, and low-wage service positions like driving, cleaning, and waiting tables .
Household and Birth Rate Statistics

The average Kuwaiti household comprises seven individuals, whereas expatriate households average two members. Birth rates also differ significantly: Kuwaitis average 21 births per 1,000 people, while non-Kuwaitis average only four.

These statistics highlight the demographic dynamics and labor distribution in Kuwait, underscoring the significant role expatriates play in the nation’s economy and society.
