Heavy rain lashes eastern parts of Kottayam district; water level rises in Meenachil, Manimala rivers

Heavy rains continued to lash Kottayam district on August 7. The eastern part of the district is receiving heavy rainfall. The water level in Meenachil and Manimala is rising. The river has inundated its banks and is flowing the road in Erattupetta.

Following the rise in water level in Manimala river, the water level rose along the Mundakkayam Causeway Bridge. The water level has risen along the Pazhayidom bridge at Kanjirapally too.

If the rain continue i, there is a possibility of flooding on both the bridges. The eastern parts of the district, namely Ilamkadu, Kootikkal and Koruthodu, are prone to landslides due to heavy rain.

If the heavy rain continues, the Meenachil river is likely to overflow. It has already flooded the city of Pala. Residents in the lower parts of the district and those in the western regions are concerned over the heavy rain in the eastern regions.

With the influx of water in the eastern region, the low-lying areas will be flooded very quickly. Landslides have occurred in many parts of the district. There are reports of landslides on some parts of KK Road on the Kottayam-Kumily Road. The floods intensified due to heavy rain on various roads in the district. Many homes and farms were flooded. The strong rain also caused crop damage.
