COVID-19 has been confirmed for 1,725 people in the state on August 17 while 1,131 people who were diagnosed and treated turned negative.
Thirteen deaths have been confirmed on the due to COVID-19. The deceased have been identified as Varghese, 90, of Paisakari, Kannur; Chandran (75), Alappuzha; Bichu (69) from Pokkunnu, Kozhikode who died on August 11; Asma (38) from Vorkadi, Kasaragod; Abbas (55) from Manjeswaram, Kasaragod, who died on August 11; Kurian Titus (42) from Muttada, Thiruvananthapuram, who died on August 13; Bichava Haji (65), Pullipara, Malappuram; Selvaraj (58) from Parasala, Thiruvananthapuram; Ramesan (47) from Bekal, Kasaragod; and Rajam S. Pillai (76), from Viyyapuram, Alappuzha who died on August 3; Mariamma (75), a resident of Kasargod Manjeswaram, who died on August 14; Risa Fathima (7 months), a resident of Uppala, Kasaragod, who died on August 16, and Silvamma (75), a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, who died on August 5. This brings the total death toll to 169. Further deaths will be confirmed after NIV testing in Alappuzha.
The district-wise break-up of the infected are as follows: 461 people from Thiruvananthapuram district, 306 people from Malappuram district, 156 people from Thrissur district, 139 people from Alappuzha district, 137 people from Palakkad district, 129 people from Ernakulam district, 97 people from Kasaragod district, 89 people from Kottayam district, 77 people from Kannur district, 48 from Kollam district, 46 from Kozhikode district, 23 from Idukki district, 15 from Wayanad district and two from Pathanamthitta district were diagnosed with the disease.
On August 17, 45 of those diagnosed with the disease were from foreign countries and 75 from other states, while 1,572 people were infected through contact. The contact source of 94 of them is not clear. Thirty-one health workers were also infected on the day. Two DSCs staff from in Kannur were also affected by the disease
There are currently 1,64,029 people under surveillance in various districts of the state. Of those under observation, 1,50,332 are under home / institutional quarantine and 13,697 are under observation in hospitals. A total of 1,455 people were admitted to hospitals on August 17.
During the last 24 hours, 26,150 samples were tested. A total of 12,05,759 samples have so far been sent for testing, including routine samples, Airport Surveillance, Pooled Sentinel, CBNAT, Trunat, CLIA and Antigen Assay. As part of Sentinel Surveillance, 1,49,766 samples were sent for testing from priority groups such as health workers, guest workers and individuals with greater social contact.
Twenty-four new hotspots were declared on the day and 21 areas were excluded from the hotspot list.
