Greta Thunberg speaks out against the conduction of NEET, JEE exams

Environmental and climate activist Greta Thunberg spoke out against the conduction of the NEET 2020 and JEE Main 2020 entrance exams which are being conducted in September.

Greta took to Twitter and wrote, “It’s deeply unfair that the students of India are asked to sit for national exams during the Covid-19 pandemic while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods.”

She also mentioned that the students of India have been deeply impacted by the floods that hit states like Bihar and Assam, which cause mass destruction for the citizens. The conduction of exams in the middle of the pandemic is highly unfair, Greta said.

Greta further wrote that she stands with the call to postpone the NEET and JEE Main 2020 examinations in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many students also replied to her tweet, showing their gratitude and appreciation for her words.

Students have been actively protesting the conduction of the NEET and JEE Main 2020 entrances, which are scheduled to be conducted in the first and second week of September. Many students also filed a plea in the Supreme Court to get the exams postponed.

The Supreme Court did not rule in their favour, and stated that the exams will be conducted according to the schedule. The court also stated that the conduction of exams is essential for the future of the students.

Meanwhile Greta felt happy to return to school after a year off campaigning to curb climate change.

“My gap year from school is over, and it feels so great to finally be back in school again!” the 17-year-old tweeted, attaching a smiling photo of herself with a schoolbag on her back and her hands resting on a bicycle.

Since her last school year finished in June 2019, the teenager’s travels around the world meant that she ended up doing lessons remotely.

Rather than head into the final years of secondary school, she travelled across the Atlantic by sailing boat — hoping to highlight the carbon emissions of flying.
