MUSCAT: Oman will host a high-level meeting between the United States and Iran on Saturday, aimed at reaching a potential nuclear deal.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday confirmed that the US will hold direct talks with Iran.
The talks will be held between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi.
“We hope that’ll lead to peace. We’ve been very clear what Iran is never going to have a nuclear weapon, and I think that’s what led to this meeting,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Donald Trump.
According to sources, the top officials from both the countries will be arriving in Muscat on Saturday afternoon. “Oman genuinely positions itself as a neutral in such dialogues. It acts as a facilitator of exchanges rather than as a mediator,” said Jonathan Campbell-James in a report published by the Interpreter.
Relations between US and Iran have been tense since President Trump said in February he was re-imposing a “maximum pressure” campaign. However, Rubio voiced hope that the talks would lead to peace. We hope that will lead to peace. We’re hopeful about that,” he added.
