September 2 or the Chathayam day during the Onam season in Chingam month of Malayalam calendar is celebrated as the birthday of Sree Narayana Guru, who upheld the great values of humanity and sowed the seeds of renaissance thought.

In a Facebook post Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that while the world was reeling from the epidemic of COVID-19, Guru’s words were becoming a guide for the journey ahead. Perhaps it was this exemplary revolution of Gurudevan that laid the best foundation of hygiene for our struggle against COVID.

“In this age where people are being divided in the name of religion, we need to be guided by the great message that whatever the religion, it is enough for man to be good. Gurudarshans inspire us to see those around us today and work for them. The visions of Sree Narayana Guru, which laid the foundation for egalitarian thinking in the minds of the Malayalees, are becoming more relevant here. On this auspicious day, each of us can take a vow to keep them intact,” the Chief Minister said in his post.

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee was a politician who played a significant role in elevating India’s prestige at the international level, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his condolence message on the death of the former President of India.

He stood for the protection and empowerment of constitutional values and constantly strived to inculcate values in the society, including secularism. Whenever he handled important departments such as finance and defence, he was able to elevate them to a remarkable level with his extraordinary personality, the chief minister said.

Pranab Mukherjee, a staunch supporter of Nehruvian political culture, played a leading role in spreading the light of scientific logic and fighting against superstitions in society. His contributions as an eminent parliamentarian and eloquent speaker will always be remembered. He maintained a deep and friendly relationship with Kerala and Malayalis.

He treasured the values of the Non-Aligned Movement and at many crucial stages adopted anti-imperialist and pro-socialist policies. The demise of Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is a great loss to the nation and the people, Mr. Vijayan said while paying homage to one of the tallest political leaders the country has seen.
