Dubai International Airport to Close as Al Maktoum Expansion Advances

Dubai : Dubai International Airport (DXB), currently the world’s busiest airport for international travel, is set to close following the completion of the first phase of the new Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) by 2032. This transition marks a significant shift in Dubai’s aviation landscape, aiming to accommodate the city’s growing passenger traffic and reinforce its status as a global aviation hub.
The new Al Maktoum International Airport, located in Dubai South, is undergoing a massive expansion with an investment of AED 128 billion ($35 billion). Once completed, it will span 70 square kilometers, feature five parallel runways, and house five passenger terminals with over 400 aircraft gates. The airport is designed to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, making it the largest in the world by capacity.
Emirates Airline, Dubai’s flagship carrier, plans to transition its operations to Al Maktoum International Airport in one move by 2034. This strategic relocation aims to provide enhanced services and accommodate the airline’s growth plans.
The closure of DXB, which has been operational since 1960, opens up opportunities for redevelopment of the site. Urban planners and experts suggest transforming the area into a low-carbon, mixed-use district that integrates residential, commercial, hospitality, and public spaces. The redevelopment plans emphasize sustainability, technological integration, and preservation of the airport’s historical significance.
DXB holds a special place in the hearts of many expatriates, including the Malayalee community, serving as a gateway between Dubai and their homelands. As the city moves forward with its ambitious aviation projects, the legacy of DXB will remain an integral part of Dubai’s rich history.
