Our Correspondent

K.V. Shamsudheen, Founder Director of Barjeel Geojit Financial Services, LLC, recently organised a webinar to express his gratitude on the occasion of his golden jubilee celebration in the United Arab Emirates as a visionary, financial pundit and investment guru, in the presence of Sheikh Sultan Bin Sooud Al Qassemi, Member of Sharjah’s ruling family, C.J, George, Managing Director Geojit Financial Services Ltd & Director of Barjeel Geojit Financial Services LLC, and Dr. Azad Moopan, Fellow Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Aster DM Healthcare, and many other dignitaries.

A native of Chavakkad in Thrissur District, currently residing in Kozhikode, Mr. Shamsudheen reached Dubai on July 21, 1970 and later moved to Sharjah. Mr. Shamsudheen, from the very beginning, inculcated his friends, peers and countrymen the culture of usage of banking services instead of adopting illegal means for transferring money to India. He became the first foreign agent of Unit Trust of India in international arena. From 1976 to 2000 he played vital role in the UAE as mentor, financial adviser and an inspiration to those who want to become a businessman.

In 2001, the financial pundit along with Sheikh Sultan Bin Sooud Al Qassemi formed Barjeel Geojit Financial Services (LLC) in the UAE. Barjeel Geojit Financial Services (LLC) was set up as a joint venture with Geojit Financial Services Limited of India, which today is the largest retail brokerage house in India.

Barjeel Geojit has four offices in UAE: Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and it is serving 200,000 clients. Mr. Shamsudheen was singly responsible for Non-Resident Indians getting permission to participate in India IPOs.

In the 1980s, while the international interest rate was 24 per cent, in India it was 8 per cent. When the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited UAE, Mr. Shamsudheen made a representation to increase the interest rate to be on a par with international rate. As a result, the interest rate was increased to 13% for NRE account.

India had a more than 50-year-old baggage rule for NRIs. When that rule was introduced in 1967, the gold price for one gram was Rs.10.25. Then, men were allowed to carry to India Rs10,000 worth of jewellery and women passengers Rs.20,000 worth of jewellery duty free. All other items that were allowed to be carried by the passengers were mentioned in quantity such as 200 cigarettes and two litre liquor.

Even when the price of gold increased, the permitted quantity continued to remain the same with the consequence that a man could not take to India even a gold ring and a woman a “mangaly sutra”.

With Shamsudheen relentlessly appealing to the Government of India to increase the amount to Rs.1 lakh worth of gold jewellery for men and Rs.2 lakh worth for women, the government relented and increased it to Rs.50,000 worth of jewellery and Rs.100,000 worth of jewellery for men and women respectively. Still he has been demanding to increase the duty free allowance of gold to 50 grams for men and 100 grams for women.

As India was implementing Aadhaar, NRIs were not eligible for it but government departments were still demanding it. As a result of Mr. Shamsudheen’s relentless efforts, the Government of India agreed to give Aadhaar to NRIs as well. The timely intervention by Mr. Shamsudheen resulted in the withdrawal of many proposals introduced by the Government of India that were against the interests of Non-Resident Indians.

Barjeel Geojit also serves as a Broker/Clearing Member of the Dubai Gold and Commodity Exchange. Continuous self-improvement has led Barjeel Geojit through the path of success throughout the years since its inception. The company always strives to define its goal, what’s next and to achieve its own standard bar.

Barjeel Geojit relentlessly pursues continuous improvement and excellence in processes and services and defines successes as getting the right things done well. The firm considers its people and reputation as its greatest asset. It has been proactive in adapting to changes that suits its clients in commensurate with prevailing market conditions.

CNBC-TV 18 conferred the ‘Financial Education and Inclusion Award’ to Mr. Shamsudheen in recognition of his contribution for inculcating financial discipline, thrift, financial planning, savings and investment habit among Indian expatriate community in Gulf Cooperation Council nations and in India for their family members. Mr. Shamsudheen has been selected by Arabian Business magazine as one among the 100 Influential Indians in the GCC for three consecutive years since 2011.

Mr. Shamsudheen’s financial education programmes have been proven effective for the low- and middle-income category workers. The need and importance of savings and investments are imparted to the expatriates for a safe, secure and comfortable life through programmes on several radio channels and TV shows. The financial pundit has published a book on Savings and Investment in 2018.

The financial guru has completed 50 golden years as a visionary, financial pundit and investment guru. His continuous contribution in the relevant field will immensely benefit both the UAE and India. As a result of decade long financial educational campaign, Mr. Shamsudheen has the satisfaction that hundreds of thousands Gulf returnees are happily living in all over Kerala and India.

There are 101 ways of good teaching. The first quality of good teaching is real life connection through creating learning environments.

A teacher needs to be the owner of a very creative mind. If the teacher doesn’t have a creative mind, it is as good as cooking food without knowing whom to serve.

The guru or teacher reflects two things, the creativity of a teacher, and the freedom or the learning independence that the teacher gives to the children. If you examine the Indian epics, guru Dhrona is an example of a good teacher. He was an expert teacher on warfare. However, he never asked any of his children, the children of the Pandava family or the Kaurava family, to learn what he wished to teach them. All that he did was to talk to them and show them the various warfare. After which he asked them to select what they wanted to learn. This is the creative thinking of a teacher, to give the freedom to children.
How can children be given the choice to learn? This is the biggest challenge. And how can children find their choice?
The Pandavas and Kauravas learnt warfare. And they learnt different types of warfare and each focused into one specialty in which they were more prominent and comfortable. The learning destination was war.

Similarly, when children come to a classroom, the learning destination is the attainment of knowledge and skills along with a language to express it, a character to benefit out of it, and an ability to support a community later. This should be the goal of any classroom.

How can a teacher become a creative person in the classroom? A teacher is like a movie director who creates a movie for. These millions of people with different mind-set focusing on one story. They are taught and entertained through the movie. Just like movie directors, teachers need to convey messages to children. For which teachers need to connect to the real life.

It is from touch to the real life.

When children are able to connect to the real life, the urge to learn will be evoked in them. So how can the teacher connect to the real life? If a teacher has the experience of connecting herself to the real life, then bringing a concept of learning from a curriculum and connecting it to the real life is easy, because the teacher has experienced and experimented it. A teacher cannot teach a theory to any child because he/she has not experimented and experienced it, and has not applied it in real life.
Imagine, if you are going to teach something and if you have applied it in the real life, you are connected to the real world. Even great actors like Mohanlal or Mammotty cannot act unless they have really experimented and taken a feel of the characters in the real world.

Having said that a teacher has experimented and experienced real-world connection of a concept, how can a teacher build that real life situation in the classroom?

Real life situation can be built in a classroom through what is called an environment of learning. For instance, to learn about animals if the teacher can take the children to the zoo it would be fantastic. The child will learn more about an elephant than from what the teacher describes and from pictures. There would be no difficulty a child is asked to identify the eyes and the trunk of an elephant because in real life, the child has connected with it.

After the child has connected, it is now time for formative questioning. The child is asked:
“Why does the elephant need eyes?”
“Why does it need a trunk?”
“Is its height and inability to raise hands is compensated by its trunk to take food to its mouth?”

Finally, in the real-life exploration, the child will understand how much an animal has adapted to its life by its creator. So, rather than just learning to draw an elephant or what its weight is and what its height is, the child will learn why the elephant is created like this and how it adapts.

The learning environment has to be created or connected, otherwise the real life connection is lost and the classroom becomes a very boring place. Either take the child to a zoo if it is an animal world, or hundreds of digital platforms are available today to bring real life connection.

History is a very important subject and every child should know history and politics. And the subjects need to be taught by creating the learning environment.

Man’s life from BC to AD is history and it will show humanity has grown over the years, from the brute to the modern sophistication. By learning history one learns how the ancestors lived, the activities they carried on, and how they were known in the communities. This teaches what we can do, what we should not do, and what we should modify.

If a child doesn’t know the history of mankind, history of continents, history of countries, history of the religions of the world, how they progressed to the modern way of living, then whatever he/she learns cannot be complimented well.

Politics needs to be taught in the similar manner. Children need to be told how humanity progressed from tribes and how tribe leaders turned into the most modern governments. So, understanding an environment in the real world and connecting to nature through a digitalised world requires a teacher to be very creative.

There are hundreds of ways for creating an environment of learning. You don’t need to have the best facilities in a school because the best facility is the environment. Everything is there. Nothing comes beyond environment, nothing shall happen without environment, and everything shall end in an environment.

Connecting to a real world through an environment is the core requirement of a good learning but it also needs something more. What is that? It is current news.

How much is the teacher aware after the current news? Because of modern communication media – televisions, news channels, newspapers – every child gets updated with the world news in one way or the other. So, the teacher needs to be updated with the current affairs in order to blend it with. Such a blended learning gets children to think in a formative way. Children will have their choice to think but will reach one destination. This is exactly what guru Dhrona did. He gave the child the choice who reached the single destination of fighting.

Accordingly, an important quality of good teaching is real life connection through creating learning environments and the teacher needs to be aligned with the current affairs of the world. The blending of all these is a good starting point for an excellent teaching.

Why are classrooms unhappy? Is it the curriculum? Is it the talents or is it the way these are put together in moulding a child? Any school that can do that shall be one of the greatest schools to the community. Any teacher who understands this shall be a great teacher for the children and they won’t ever forget him/her.

In society we come into contact with people with various attitudes every day. There are some people who are very proactive, smiling, innovative, talking, and makes everyone happy. They won’t insult others and respect everyone. We also come across people who are very serious, do not smile and talk to the point. There are also some others (the fault finders) who always criticise others, and yet others who are silent listeners.

What happens when you recruit the different kinds of people into a job? What type of working atmosphere are they going to create?

Subject to their intellectual levels, people love to work with positive people who respect others, are always supportive and kind. The second set of people who are very serious, subject to their intellectual level, might execute a job but you will not feel any warmth of an employee, colleague working with you because they have nothing to speak to you.

The third type of people, who are sharp criticisers subject to their intellectual levels might do a job well but they will be more focused on finding the fault of the boss, colleagues, the system and even with material things such as chairs, tables, and air-conditioners. Their focus will be mostly on the negative side of a given situation.

One thing that binds all these categories is their intellectual level. If intellectual skills intellectual things are missing, life with our colleagues will be miserable. Intellectual level is the ability of a person to respond, to respect, and to obey public regulations, and to use intellectual skills while doing a job. Such individuals become very important people in society.

Intellectual skill is about application of knowledge in a given situation. Classrooms should teach children more about life speaking skills, behaving skills, respecting skills, and accepting skills. It helps child to become a useful youth for tomorrow.

A person becomes very important to a society when three integral forces merge in a person: Vikara, Vijara, and Viveka Vikshobham. Vichara is thinking and vikara is feeling. Both have a strong connection. There cannot be one without the other. But if these two need to unite a third ingredient is needed and that is viveka (wisdom).

When feeling and thinking are blended with wisdom what comes out is a new river from the triveni sangama. If the teacher knows how to blend the talents of every child in the classroom, he or she will be a wonderful youth for the country tomorrow. If this doesn’t happen, what would be the end result of that classroom? Children may memorise things but do not understand what they learn. So, even if the child is talented, the purpose is taken away. It is like cooking food that nobody can eat.

Amarnath Yatra, the annual Hindu pilgrimage to a Jammu and Kashmir shrine, will not take place this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the board that manages the place of worship said on July 21. This is the second year in a row that the pilgrimage would not be carried out. In 2019 the pilgrimage was cancelled mid-way.
The Centre then announced its twin decisions to scrap Article-370 and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories.
“Based upon the circumstances, the Board decided with heavy heart that it is not advisable to hold and conduct this year’s Shri Amarnathji Yatra and expressed its regret to announce the cancellation of Yatra 2020,” the Amarnath Shrine Board said in a statement.
“The Board is aware of and respects the sentiments of millions of devotees and to keep the religious sentiments alive, the Board shall continue the Live Telecast/ Virtual Darshan of the morning and evening Aarti. Further, the traditional rituals shall be carried out as per past practice,” it said.
The Supreme Court, in an order this month, had asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to take a decision on organising the pilgrimage, taking in account the ground realities.
Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu presided over a meeting of the Board, which was attended by senior Union Territory and the Board officials.

Communication, if not effective, will spoil the future of a child. Communication happens at home and in public. And we have to communicate in the workplace as well.

Many times, it can be found that a large section of the people who are employed are unable to communicate. Why are they unable to communicate? They will only communicate, speak to their closest friends about what they really think about a problem or a subject. So why can’t they communicate in an office or in public? It is because of the fear, the fear of an unknown problem, an unknown risk, or the fear of committing a mistake.

Do you think that there will be a platform anywhere that you can communicate without fear? Yes, you can communicate in a public place without fear. But all that you should know is a very important thing called emotional intelligence. If you know what the other person thinks, then can you communicate to the thoughts of another person. Look at our politicians, look at anybody who works in social leadership; they may not have studied much, but they have the courage to talk on anything under the sun. They can criticise, they can applaud, they can communicate to your thoughts. And slowly you will admire Therefore, communication and becoming successful are linked very closely.

The extent to which you can communicate to the thoughts of people who are not known to you will decide your influence in a public platform. And if you don’t have that communication spirit, ability, whatever you are, how great you are, you cannot come up in a public place and speak. Where shall you acquire this skill?

Poets, novelists, and dramatists become very famous because they have the ability to communicate to the public and ignite the thoughts of the public from their mind. If communication in a public place is not developed it will be very difficult for anyone to be known in public. Therefore, in the modern world, the ability to communicate in a public place is a skill that everyone should acquire. However, the first challenge is how to overcome the fear of the mind to speak to a large crowd. The second challenge is how to understand the emotions of a crowd. If you know what they think and what they wish to hear you can easily communicate to them. Everyone should know emotional intelligence very well. One should know the art of understanding the mind of others. One need not have to change the ideas, values, policies, and perspective of the listener.

There is difference between public and official communication. Official communication has less of emotional intelligence but more of sharpness. It should be based on policies, directions, and abstraction.

What is abstraction.? Imagine if your fish curry doesn’t have pieces of fish, can you eat it? You can, but can you enjoy it? It is the piece of fish in the curry that gives it the taste. Similarly, when somebody speaks there should be some measured quantities, numbers, allowing people to imagine and with the measured numbers people can easily capture it. Official communications must be based on abstract numbers otherwise it will not be read. There should be an ability to become a quick reader and quick reading requires assessing paragraph-wise, importance of the centre and numerical terms in it and adherence to rules and regulations. So, this has to be well-trained.

Another kind of communication is home conversation which means communication in a personal relationship. The binding principle in a home communication is emotional intelligence. Understanding each other’s mind-sets. But it is more embedded in love, tolerance, patience, and empathy. If these basic values of communication are lost, communication in a personal relationship will be unacceptable.

Where and how shall we learn the art of communication The basic ingredient of communication is confidence. One must have the ability to remove fear. If you cannot speak in front of an audience, the simple problem is lack of confidence. If the gain confidence the fear of committing mistakes vanishes, and every communication turns out to be an offer to God. That is the highest form of communication where you do it like a prayer.
And, how do you communicate like a prayer? Where can we remove the fear? How can we remove the fear? And who can remove the fear?
Let’s go back to the classroom. Did the teacher develop in the child the ability to speak communicate? Were children given total freedom without fear? Every communication needs to be appreciated and supported. Don’t discriminate against any child. The more the freedom given, the higher will be the confidence gained. Confidence building is, thus, the fundamental of communication.

Communication is not from amassing bookish knowledge and it is not from building vocabulary. On the contrary, communication is a free mind in confidence which can bring together thoughts and feelings and express them in a language that comes to the heart along with facial expressions and gestures that penetrates into the listener’s mind and heart; truly embedded in the emotional intelligence.

A team of scientists at the California Institute of Technology has discovered microbes that are capable of eating metals. Scientists revealed that these bacteria were discovered accidentally, and they suggested the existence of these microbes at least for more than a century.

Scientists made this mindblowing discovery while performing experiments with Manganese, a mineral that exists as a combination with iron. The discovery happened when Dr Jared Leadbetter, professor of environmental microbiology at Caltech left a glass jar covered with a substance to soak in his office room.

Due to off-campus work, Leadbetter did not turn up to his office for several months, and when he returned, the researcher was surprised to see the jar covered with a dark substance. Further analysis revealed that this dark substance was oxidized Manganese. Later, scientists confirmed that this oxidization was triggered by a unique type of bacteria.

“These are the first bacteria found to use manganese as their source of fuel. A wonderful aspect of microbes in nature is they can metabolise seemingly unlikely materials, like metals, yielding energy useful to the cell. There is evidence that relatives of these creatures reside in groundwater, and a portion of Pasadena’s drinking water is pumped from local aquifers,” said Leadbetter.

Leadbetter and his colleagues are now planning to learn more about these bacteria, and its probable uses, which include removal of pollutants from water, called bioremediation.

Decision-making is a very important skill a child should acquire while in a classroom. This may sound very strange because a child learns subject knowledge, concepts, language, and literacy as well as moral science. Then, one might wonder how decision making can get be taught in a classroom. As decision-making is an important skill and is not practised by someone when he/she is a child, later in life he/she will find it extremely difficult to take a decision.
I employ more than 3,000 people, most of them are at the senior level hailing from different parts of the world. But most of them ideally prefer to be an information provider or an opinion provider and are averse to decision making. A large majority of people don’t want any role in decision making. They are just providers of information. If you ask them to provide a particular data, they do just that. It is impossible for them to interpret a data as that means understanding and undertaking the risk. So risks are something they are averse to take as they feel that they will be held accountable for the risk taken. So they try to avoid it. Why does that happen? It is just because they have had no experience in taking risks.
Many a time we have come across people who are great entrepreneurs who have built large institutions. Most of them are school dropouts, sometimes they were dull, or haven’t been schooled at all. They don’t have a PhD, or an advanced degree, but they have taken the bulk of decisions that contained every risk. They grew from nowhere into large entities serving a society. Just look around you and you will find many such business owners. Starting from food to textiles to restaurants to hotels to hospitals. They have not taken any major degree or a Ph.D. But they took decisions and risks. And, where did they learn the skill of risk taking and decision making?
The ability to decide always goes hand-in-hand with risk balancing. These are not subjects to be studied in colleges but has to be cultivated from the school level. The ability of a student to explore the unknown from what is known has to be habituated from the school days. People who have the ability to think are those who contribute to the community later. There are many decision-makers I have worked with and they decide out of passion. Many people were driven by passion without study of risks. The risk is nothing but the unknown. So from Day 1, a child should develop two habits. One is test a knowledge that has come to him/her. ‘Is this appealing to me?’ ‘Is this the right knowledge?’
In the modern world of young men and women, most of the information that you see on a television or read in a newspaper or what you hear are not the truth. They are put there for you to believe. The skill of analysing a given information should go with one’s common sense. ‘Can I believe this? Is it 100% truthful? Or is there any hidden agenda?’ ‘Will there be something that could go wrong when I take this information and move forward?’ That ability to suspect a data and clarify the truth of a data is nothing but one’s common sense of connecting that information with all the other information available. An unconnected information is a high risk information.
Look at anything that is happening around you. A particular incident that happens maybe very much appealing to your emotions, but you need to connect that event to all the events that you find around it. Then you will see, ‘Okay this has happened, but why has it happened? But why has it happened? And if the event is unacceptable and very sad; you think, ‘What has gone wrong?’ You will start exploring the unknown areas. And you will connect it with 360 degree of search, all that you know about it and that can be connected to it.
If this ability is developed in a child, you don’t have to worry about that person. He will know how to understand a fact or a risk and how to mitigate the risk and finally decide. If this quality is not there then even qualified people can only work as an assistant or a data creator or a data provider or a data assistant as they cannot take a risk.
So, encourage children to connect to the information gathered, break the given information into small pieces and reassemble the information. Encourage them to connect it to everything they can – to nature, to reality, and to other factors; and test whether this information connects well. If a child fails to connect an information, compromises on connecting an information, then he/she won’t come up in life. I have seen many people who come close to decision making and then turn away. They will not take a decision and they would want to pass on the ladder to you. They don’t have the ability to connect data and understand the risk.
However, the moment the information is owned, fully connected, the child will know the risk and will decide. The decision-making process should, thus, start in a classroom. And if this happens in a classroom, every child will acquire decision-making skill or risk analysing skill. Decision-making cannot happen otherwise.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai celebrated his 71st birthday on July 15.
UAE residents took to social media to pay respects to Sheikh Mohammed, with well-wishers lauding him as the “pride of the nation” and an “inspiration of generations” of Emiratis.
The emirate of Dubai owes a good part of its glamorous development to Sheikh Mohammed, who became Dubai’s ruler in 2006 after the death of his older brother Sheikh Maktoum. He had since then continued the work of his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, transforming Dubai into a global tourist destination and business hub.
Like his father, Sheikh Mohammed was keen on establishing Dubai as a commercial and trading centre after the collapse of the pearl industry and before the discovery of oil.
At the age of four, he was privately tutored in Arabic and Islamic studies. He began formal education at the age of six; 11 years later, he attended an English language school in Cambridge. He went on to attend a cadet school in Aldershot, which later became part of Sandhurst. He then went to Italy to be trained as a pilot.
In January 1968, at the age of 19, he accompanied his father to meet Sheikh Zayed in the desert between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to discuss forming a union of the seven emirates. He became the nation’s first Minister of Defence in 1971 following the formation of the UAE.

Bihar will go for a total lockdown from July 16 to 31 to contain the spread of COVID-19, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi announced on July 14.

On his official Twitter handle, Modi said the 15-day lockdown will remain in force at all municipal, district, sub divisional and block headquarters level and that guidelines were being prepared.

“The government has taken a decision to this effect… Corona has neither any vaccine nor any medicine,” Modi said in a virtual rally, details of which were shared on his Twitter handle.

The move comes close on the heels of recent spike in positive cases which had necessitated lockdowns, imposed by the local administrations, in several districts.

According to reports, during the lockdown, emergency services, trains and flights will continue. Also local fruit and vegetable shops are likely to open once each in morning and evening. However, public transport services, shopping malls, and religious places like temples, across the state, will remain closed.

The government, reportedly, took this decision during a high-level meeting, which was called today to discuss further measures to curb the spread of the infection in the state.

On July 14, the government had extended lockdown in Nawada, Buxar and Supaul and announced fresh lockdown in Sitamarhi and Lakhisarai. With this, lockdown is now imposed in 20 districts across the state.

Several states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Nagaland, have already announced lockdown till July 31. Uttar Pradesh government has announced lockdowns on all Saturdays and Sundays.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in India continue to rise unabatedly with the tally crossing 9-lakh mark on Tuesday. The country recorded last 1 lakh cases in just three days. Meanwhile, the death toll is nearing 24,000 mark.

UAE Minister of Culture and Youth Noura bint Mohamed Al Kaabi has said that the change in the status quo of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was effected without any regard to the civilizational value of the historical edifice, Wam reported.
“It has remained a global landmark with significant cultural legacy. It also served as a bridge connecting different peoples and cementing their bonds,” she said in a statement on July 11.
The Minister, who is also Chairperson of the National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, said that cultural heritage is a human legacy that ought to be preserved.
“It should neither be misused nor altered through change in a way that touches the human essence. Especially for sites that are inscribed under World Heritage by UNESCO. They have exceptional international value, and are the common heritage of all peoples and cultures,” she said.
Al Kaabi said that preserving human heritage strengthened the values of tolerance and coexistence between different nations.

“World heritage sites have become the platforms for knowledge exchange between diverse cultures and civilizations that evolved in history across time. Hagia Sophia is an important example of interaction and dialogue between Asia and Europe and should remain a witness to harmonious human history,” she elaborated.
The Minister emphasized the importance of the statement issued by UNESCO, which had stressed that Hagia Sophia was part of historic Istanbul. The UAE is a member of the UNESCO’s Executive Board.
“It is designated as a heritage museum by UNESCO. It is an architectural marvel and is a unique witness to the interaction between Asia and Europe across centuries. It is a symbol of dialogue,” she said.
The UNESCO demanded in its statement that countries that are home to cultural heritage sites should not alter them in ways that harm their outstanding universal value. A country that wants to alter anything should inform UNESCO in advance so the world heritage committee could look into it if need be.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 11 detained two key accused in Kerala gold smuggling case, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, from Bengaluru in a swift operation.

The two accused were on the run for the last six days after the Customs Department seized 30 kg of gold from an air cargo consignment in Thiruvananthapuram. They will be brought to Kochi in the early hours of Sunday, said an official. It is, however, not clear how the duo slipped out of Thiruvananthapuram, which is under a triple lockdown with an aim to contain the spread of coronavirus disease, and reached Karnataka.

The NIA had taken up the case on July 10 and filed first information reports against four persons in the case. In the FIRs, Sarith Kumar, a former employee of the consular office, who is now in the custody of the customs, is named first accused; Swapna Suresh is the second; elusive smuggling-kingpin Fazil Pareed is the third; and Suresh’s friend Sandeep Nair is the fourth accused. The FIRs were filed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

It is the first time that the premier agency, which handles cases related to national security and terror, is investigating a gold smuggling case. In the FIRs, NIA said the accused were part of a well-entrenched smuggling racket.

The Kerala Police had set up a special group to arrest Swapna Suresh and Sandeep on July 11. The DGP had entrusted a special investigation team under the leadership of Kochi City Deputy Police Commissioner G. Poonkuzhali with the task of apprehending the accused.

The Customs authorities had requested the Kochi City Police Commissioner all help for the arrest of the suspects in an email by afternoon.
It is then that the NIA team arrested the accused in Bangalore.

Considering the unmet medical needs to treat COVID-19, Drugs Controller General of India, Dr V G Somani, approved monoclonal antibody injection Itolizumab, an already approved drug of Biocon, for restricted emergency use for the treatment of “cytokine” release syndrome in moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome patients due to COVID-19, they said.

“The approval was given after its clinical trials on COVID-19 patients in India was found satisfactory by the expert committee comprising pulmonologists, pharmacologists and medicine experts from AIIMS, among others, for treatment of cytokine release syndrome,” an official was quoted as saying.

“It is already an approved drug of Biocon for treating psoriasis for last many years,” the official said.

Written informed consent of each patient is required before the use of this drug, he said.

West Indies captain Jason Holder took a career-best haul of 6 for 42 to roll England for 204 at the Ageas Bowl, before their top order saw them through to the close one wicket down.

Holder came into this series with an injury cloud over his head, having bowled only five overs across West Indies’ two intra-squad warm-up games while nursing an ankle complaint. He admitted that he felt “a little sore, a little stiff” after play on the second day, but that pain will be lessened thanks to the knowledge that he has put his team into the driving seat in this series.

Shannon Gabriel was given license to attack, snaring another three wickets to add to that of Dom Sibley on the first day, and while Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Dom Bess offered some resistance with the bat, England’s total of 204 looked a little light after a dogged start from West Indies.

While it would prove to be Holder’s day, it was Gabriel who made the early breakthroughs after Rory Burns and Joe Denly had come through the first half hour. Denly was the first to go, his stumps splattered as a vicious nip-backer burst through a hefty gap between bat and pad and crashed into the top of off. Then, after hanging the ball outside Burns’ off stump from round the wicket, Gabriel fired one in full at his pads, striking him in front of leg stump. Richard Kettleborough concluded it was missing leg stump, but Holder disagreed and was vindicated by a successful review.

In his second spell of the day, Holder started by teasing Zak Crawley with a series of outswingers, nibbling away and probing on a length in the channel outside his off stump. After Crawley’s streaky boundary through the slips ruined a maiden from his eighth over, Holder decided the time was right to bring one in at the start of his ninth, finding a hint of seam movement from wide on the crease which Crawley played around. Again, Kettleborough said no; again, Holder was convinced, and was proved right. Ollie Pope started with a pair of boundaries off him, but was soon back in the hutch after fencing at an away-nibbler, which Shane Dowrich gobbled up behind the stumps.

Buttler and Stokes led a counter-attack, putting on the only stand of 50 or more in the innings, but Stokes rode his luck. Before lunch he had miscued a hook shot to long leg, where Roach shelled a difficult chance after making his ground, and after looking to impose himself in the afternoon, Stokes chipped a low catch to Shamarh Brooks, who put down a sitter at short cover. Buttler looked a million dollars from the moment he arrived at the crease, with a back-foot punch through the covers the pick of his shots, but both fell in the space of two Holder overs.

First, having sensed Stokes using his feet, Holder pushed the ball fuller, first beating the bat and then drawing a faint edge through to Dowrich. The pair’s battle had been built up before this Test, with Holder suggesting he might not have been given the credit he deserved; there can be little doubt that he will be today. Buttler feathered his own edge behind which Dowrich took sharply, before Jofra Archer was trapped on the pad for a third overturned lbw. Mark Wood provided Holder with his sixth, driving loosely and edging to gully, before James Anderson’s stumps were rattled by Gabriel after some late resistance from Bess for the 10th wicket.

In reply, England bowled with good pace but failed to make as many breakthroughs as they would have hoped. Anderson was the most threatening bowler. Three times he wrapped John Campbell on the pad and had him given lbw; on the first two occasions, Richard Illingworth’s decision was overturned as the ball had pitched outside the leg stump, but on the third, the on-field call was upheld.

Wood and Archer, playing alongside one another for the first time in Test cricket, both bowled with real pace. Wood regularly broke the 90mph/145kph barrier and even hit 95mph/153kph but drew few false shots, as Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope – batting at No. 3, having come in below Shamarh Brooks in the warm-up fixtures – managed to dig in until the close.

It was easy to wonder whether Stuart Broad, tweeting his thoughts on the game from his hotel room balcony, might have made an impact in conditions that seemed perfectly suited to him.

There was widespread frustration at another couple of stoppages for bad light, as the clouds rolled in and brought play to an early close for the second night in a row, but thankfully the forecast is set fair for the rest of the Test.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian Armed forces in Ladakh, lauded their dedication with which they are protecting the country. Mr. Modi said their willpower is as firm as the mountains where they are posted. The Prime Minister also paid tributes to the soldiers martyred in the Galwan Valley clash.
The Prime Minister said, “Friends, your dedication to the protection of motherland is matchless. The conditions in which you are protecting and serving India, nobody in the world can compete with that. The bravery that you and your compatriots showed, a message has gone to the world about India’s strength. Your courage is higher than the heights where you are posted today.”
“Your willpower is as firm as the mountains which we can see. Today, I can feel and see with my eyes that when the duty of protection of India is in your hands, the whole country believes in you and they feel relaxed. This inspires the citizens to work day and night for the country,” he said
“The courage which you all and your peers showed has sent across the message across the world about India’s strength. I can see women, soldiers, too. This inspires us more,” the Prime Minister said.
Paying his tributes to the soldiers who were martyred in the Galwan valley clash, Mr. Modi said, “The bravery of 14 Corps will be talked about everywhere. Tales of your bravery and valour are echoing in every house in the country. Bharat Mata’s enemies have seen your fire and fury.”
“Those who are weak can never initiate peace, bravery is a pre-requisite for peace. Whether World Wars or peace, whenever the need arises, the world has seen the victory of our braves and their efforts towards peace. We have worked for the betterment of humanity,” he said.
Mr. Modi said, “We are the same people who pray to the flute playing Lord Krishna but we are also the same people who idolise and follow the same Lord Krishna who carries the ‘Sudarshana Chakra'”
The Prime Minister contrasted vistaarvaad (Expansionism) with vikasvaad (Developmental growth), in an unmentioned but direct assessment of China, and slammed powers that tried to use expansionism.
Mr. Modi, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief M.M. Naravane, reached Leh around 9.30 am, sources said. He visited one of the forward locations in Nimu where he interacted with personnel of the Army, Air Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
The Prime Minister was also briefed by senior Army officers. Located at 11,000 feet, Nimu is among the toughest terrains, on the banks of river Indus and surrounded by the Zanskar range.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has called a meet of core ministers back in Delhi. Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and other PMO officials will attend the meeting, sources said.
The Prime Minister’s visit, which comes as an almost unforeseeable development, assumes massive significance on account of India being engaged in multifaceted tensions with China, leading the world in this regard as anti-China sentiment grows.

Opening the way for President Vladimir Putin, Russians voted for a package of constitutional changes that would allow him to stay in power until 2036. According to Russia’s Central Election Commission, 78% of votes counted had supported in favour and 21% had voted against the constitutional changes. The overall turnout was 65% and in some regions, almost 90% of eligible voters cast votes, the election officials said.

However critics questioned the turnout figures and said the outcome was falsified on an industrial scale. Opposition politician Alexei Navalny called the vote an illegitimate and illegal show designed to legalise Putin’s presidency for life.On the other hand, Ella Pamfilova, head of the commission, said the vote had been transparent and that officials had done everything to ensure its integrity.

Meanwhile, several activists staged a symbolic protest on Red Square on July 1 forming the date – 2036 – with their bodies in protest before being detained by police. In the event, dozens of people protested amid a heavy police presence and demanded for the resignation of Putin.

Vladimir Putin is the longest-serving Russian leader since Josef Stalin

In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till November end, helping over 80 crore people to avail 5 kg free food grains. The Prime Minister said this extension will cost over Rs 90,000 crore.
Excerpts from Mr. Modi’s address to the nation:
India is now entering Unlock-Two in our fight against the corona pandemic. We are also entering the season of increasing cases of cough, cold and fever. I, therefore, request all of you to take special care of yourselves
Friends, considering corona’s death rate, India is comparatively in a better position compared to many countries of the world. Timely imposition of lockdown and other decisions have saved lakhs of lives. But we have also seen that since Unlock-One, there is increasing negligence in personal and social behaviour. Earlier, we were very careful with respect to wearing of masks, social distancing and washing of hands for 20 seconds. But today, when we need to be more careful, increasing negligence is a cause of worry.
Friends, rules were followed very strictly during the Lockdown. Now governments, local bodies, citizens, need to show similar alertness. Especially, we need to focus more on containment zones. Those not following the rules will need to be stopped and cautioned. You must have seen in the news, Prime Minister of a country was fined Rs.13,000 for not wearing a mask in public place. In India too, the local administration should work with the same enthusiasm. This is a drive to protect the lives of 130 crore countrymen. Be it a village pradhan or the Prime Minister, no one is above the law in India
Friends, nation’s top priority during the lockdown was to ensure that no one remains hungry. Central government, state governments, civil society, all did their best… to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry. Be it a nation or a person, timely and sensible decisions increase our power to fight any crisis. Thus, immediately after the lockdown, the government brought out the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. Under this scheme, a package worth Rs.1.75 lakh crore was provided for the poor.
In the last three months, 20 crore poor households have received direct benefit transfers worth Rs.31,000 Crore. During this period, Rs.18,000 crore have been deposited in bank accounts of over 9 Crore farmers. Simultaneously, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan was quickly launched for employment of Shramiks in rural areasGovernment is spending Rs. 50,000 Crore on this.
India, over 80 crore people were given free ration for three months. It means, every member of the family was given 5 kilogram wheat or rice, free of cost. In addition, every family got one kilogram pulse a month, free of cost. In a way, over 2.5 times the population of the United States, 12 times the population of the United Kingdom and double the population of the European Union was given free ration by our government.
July marks beginning of the festive season. 5th July is Guru Purnima, then month of Saawan is starting. Then 15th August is coming, Raksha Bandhan, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam will follow. Further, Kati Bihu, Navratri, Durga Puja is coming, then Dussera, Diwali and Chhath. This festive season increases necessities as well as expenditure.
Keeping the festive season in mind, it has been decided to extend Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana up to Diwali and Chhath Puja, till November-end.
Free ration to 80 crore people will continue in July, August, September, October, November. The government will provide free ration to 80 crore poor brothers-sisters for five months. Every member of family will get five kilogram wheat or rice. Also, every family will get one kilogram whole chana a month, free of cost.
Over Rs.90 thousand crore will be spent on this extension of PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. If we add expenditure of last three months on this scheme, then it comes to around Rs.1.5 lakh crore.
One Nation, One Ration card is also being implemented. Major beneficiaries of this will be those who go to other states, in search of employment.
Today, if the government is able to provide free ration to the needy and poor, then credit for it goes to two categories. One – hard working farmers of our country. Second – honest taxpayers of our country. It is your hard work and dedication, due to which the nation is able to do it. You have filled the stocks of the nation, therefore, there is food in kitchen of poor, workers. You paid the tax honestly, you fulfilled your duty. That is why, the poor of the country is successfully coping with such a big crisis. On behalf of all the poor of the country, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the taxpayers and farmers, and also salute them.
In the coming days, we will further strengthen our efforts and continuously work to empower the poor, downtrodden and deprived sections of society. While taking all the precautions, we will further expand the Economic Activities. We will work ceaselessly for Atmanirbhar Bharat. We all will be vocal for Local. With this pledge and commitment, the 130 crore people of this country will have to work together and move forward together.

Tamil Nadu has grabbed the first position in fish landings with 7.75 lakh tonnes followed by Gujarat (7.49 lakh t), which was holding the first position for a past few years, and Kerala (5.44 lakh t) which retained the third position, according to a study report.
India’s marine fish production registered a marginal increase of 2.1% in 2019 compared to the previous year with the country recording 3.56 million tonnes in total landings from across the coasts during the year, according to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).This was revealed in a study report on annual marine fish landings estimates in the country during the last year released here by the CMFRI.
The data showed an unusual feature of a commercially unimportant fish becoming the most landed resource with the red toothed trigger fish (2.74 lakh t) registering a huge increase in the landings across the coasts of the country. Ironically, this fish has little demand in domestic markets and is mostly caught for the purpose of feed mills.
In another major highlight of the data, Indian mackerel, which was in the first spot in 2018, suffered the highest setback with its landings declining by 43 per cent last year.
While the states such as West Bengal (55%), Andhra Pradesh (34%), Odisha (14.5%), Karnataka (11%) and Tamil Nadu (10.4%) recorded increase in the landings, the marine fish catch decreased in Maharashtra (32%), Goa (44%) and Kerala (15.4%) compared to the previous year. The second highest landings in national-level is ribbon fish (2.19 lakh t) followed by penaeid prawns (1.95 lakh t) and non-penaeid prawns (1.80 lakh t).
As many as eight cyclonic storms in and around India of which 6 of them turned out to be severe cyclones (Fani in April, Vayu in June, Hika in September, Kyarr in October, Maha in Oct-Nov and Bulbul in Oct-Nov) affected the fishing calendar days more adversely on the west coast of the country.

Fish production declines in Kerala

Kerala suffered a significant drop of 15.4 per cent in the marine fish landings during the last year with a total landings of 5.44 lakh tonnes. Sharp decline in the catch of oil sardine and Indian mackerel, the two major resources in the state, is the major highlight of Kerala’s landings. While oil sardine dropped to a meagre 44,320 tonnes, the lowest catch in two decades, Indian mackerel (40,554 t) experienced a steep decline of 50 per cent compared to the previous year.
In 2012, the catch of oil sardine in Kerala was 3.9 lakh tonnes. Since then, there was a substantial decrease in the catch every year, but it moved up in 2017. The oil sardine landings again continued to decline for the past two years thanks to the unfavourable changes in ocean environment. After analysing the correlation between the ocean environment and biological cycle of the oil sardine, the CMFRI had forecast in January last year that sardine landing would decline in the year in Kerala waters. The contribution from Kerala towards the overall landings in the country reduced to 15.3 per cent from 18.4 per cent in 2018.
The anchovies group (74.194 t) tops the list of the most landed resources in the state followed by red toothed trigger fish (62,782 t) and penaeid prawns (46,615 t).

Increase in value of fish
The estimate of the value of marine fish landings based on price at landing centres across the country during 2019 was Rs.60,881 crores with 15.6 per cent increase over 2018. The unit price per kg of fish at landing centre rate was Rs. 170.5 (12.2 per cent increase). At the retail level, the estimated value of marine fish was Rs. 92,356 crores (15 per cent increase over 2018). The unit price at the retail market level was Rs. 258.7 (12 per cent increase over 2018). The marketing efficiency determining the producer’s share of the consumers was found to be 66 (0.6 per cent increase over 2018).
In Kerala, the value of marine fish landings based on price at landing centres was Rs. 12,387 crores with an increase of 20.35 per cent over 2018 while it was Rs 17,515 crores in retail level in the state recording nearly 19 per cent increase.
The Fishery Resources Assessment Division of the CMFRI estimated the annual marine fish landings of the country through its online data collection system.
