Revision of private teachers’ salaries in Sharjah likely soon

A proposal to increase the minimum wages of teachers in Sharjah has been sent to the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA), said Dr Humaid Jassem Al Zaabi, chairman of the Education, Culture, Youth and Media Committee of the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC). This will help them cope with the rising cost of living, he said.

The proposal was made after a study of the salaries of teachers in private schools, which showed that low salaries prevailed in many schools. The current minimum wage for teachers is Dh 2,000 a month. Teachers earn between Dh 2,000 and Dh 7,000 a month here.

Al Zaabi said the committee received complaints about low salaries from teachers, and how they were often forced to take tuition to sustain themselves. He said that the salary hike will motivate teachers to develop their skills and also improve job opportunities in this sector in the future.

Teachers have played a critical role in the UAE’s quick implementation of the e- learning system during the ongoing pandemic.
