Dubai: More UAE residents are switching to electric vehicles (EVs) for a greener future.
Residents cited various factors behind their decision, including environmental concerns, cost savings, low maintenance, AI-driven features, advanced safety features, ease of accessing online services, enhanced charging infrastructure, and improved vehicle range.
Abu Dhabi-based Emirati entrepreneur Ahmed Almazrouei was an early adopter of EVs in 2020.
“Before switching to an EV, I was driving a [petrol car]. In 2020, there weren’t many EVs in the UAE, and I wanted to experience something new and innovative. The idea of driving something cutting-edge and more environmentally friendly really appealed to me. Plus, the benefits of EVs like lower maintenance costs, fewer emissions, and the convenience of charging at home were major selling points,” he said.
Almazrouei has had a positive experience driving his EV.
“The smooth, quiet drive is a huge difference from traditional cars, and the instant torque is a lot of fun. Over time, I’ve also noticed the savings on fuel and maintenance. It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m contributing to reducing my carbon footprint while still enjoying a high-performance vehicle.”
Make the leap
Almazrouei urged anyone unsure about making the move to give it a try.
“The technology has come a long way, and the charging infrastructure is improving. You might be surprised by how easy it is to adapt, and the long-term savings and environmental benefits make it worth it. Plus, driving an EV can be a really enjoyable and rewarding experience,” Almazrouei added.
Fewer emissions
Soumitri Nanda, a senior regulatory affairs professional living in Dubai for the past 12 years, switched to an EV in 2022.
“My old petrol car was due for a replacement and as I was researching a new one, I found out about the difference in emissions between an electric and a conventional petrol car. It opened my eyes and showed me how much more beneficial owning an electric car is for the planet,” she said.
Nanda was also encouraged by the increasing global adoption of EVs.
Future of transportation
Jafar Sherif T.A., a senior information technology manager, was motivated by a strong desire to embrace cutting-edge technology and innovation.
“EVs represent the future of transportation, offering advancements such as advanced battery technology, regenerative braking systems, and over-the-air software updates. These vehicles often come equipped with features that push the boundaries of automotive technology, including autonomous driving capabilities, smart infotainment systems, and seamless connectivity,” said Sherif, a tech enthusiast.
