US House passes NO Ban Act, reversing Trump’s Muslim ban

US House passed a bill on Wednesday to reverse President Donald Trump’s controversial order that bans the entry of people from Muslim- majority countries into the United States.

The legislation called the NO Ban Act, was approved in a 238-183 vote.

The ‘NO Ban Act’ has broad support among Democratic legislators but is unlikely to advance in the Senate because of opposition from Republicans and the White House.

The House bill would limit the president’s authority on immigration-related decisions, including prohibiting religious discrimination when issuing visas for foreigners. It would also terminate certain restrictions imposed on travelling to the US from primarily Muslim countries.

The US Supreme Court had ruled in 2017 that the president has the authority to impose ban under existing US immigration law. During his election campaign in 2015, Trump had called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”.

House Representative Ilhan Omar said that she was proud to rise in support of the NO Ban Act. She said that The White House has tried to wrap their hate policy under the charade of national security but the truth was palpable.

Congressional attempt to repeal Trump’s executive order comes three years after he issued the ban during his first week in office. Trump had faced backlash for his insensitive move.
