Ten dead in Thane building collapse

Ten persons were killed and at least 20 others are feared trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi area of Thane district early on Monday. The Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation had twice earlier served the residents of the building a notice to vacate the property as it was in a dangerous condition.

The Gilani building, situated at Patel compound of Narpoli near Dhamankar Naka, collapsed at around 3.40 am, while the residents were asleep. Around 25 families were staying in the property at the time of the incident.

The building is believed to be at least 40 years old.Around 20 persons were rescued by the locals.

A team of NDRF personnel are on the spot and rescue operations are underway.A child was also pulled from the debris and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

As per the initial information, 31 people have been rescued from the rubble of the building in Patel Compound Area. A child was among the 11 people rescued by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish over the building collapse and said all possible assistance is being provided to the affected.

More than 40 emergency workers, including a team of 30 rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are at the scene.
