He was arrested for his alleged role in the riots that broke in north-east neighbourhoods of the Delhi in February 2020.

Umar Khalid was earlier charged under the UAPA in another case related to the riots.

In April, his name was recorded in the FIR registered in connection with the northeast Delhi riots that broke out in February following a series of protests held in favour and against the contentious citizenship amendment act (CAA). His mobile phone was also seized by the police.

“After 11 hours of interrogation, the Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested Umar Khalid as a conspirator in the Delhi Riots case. The fairy tale narrative that DP (Delhi Police) has been spinning and criminalising protests in the garb of investigating riots, finds yet another victim,” United Against Hate, an activist group whose member is Umar Khalid, said in a statement.

He will be produced to the court on Monday.

In August also, he was summoned by the Special Cell and faced grilling for three hours.
Violence in parts of north-east Delhi from February 23 to 26- after weeks of protests against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens- had left over 50 dead and hundreds injured, many with gunshot wounds.

Around 108 police personnel received injuries and two died.

The Delhi police said that it was investigating the role of all individuals who allegedly took part in the riots and were a part of a larger conspiracy in inciting communal violence and hatred among communities.

Umar Khalid’s arrest comes amid a political row over CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury and Swaraj Abhiyan chief Yogendra Yadav being named in a disclosure statement of an accused in the Delhi riots.

So far police have arrested 1,575 people in 751 cases.

Over 250 chargesheets have been filed in the riots related cases in which 1,153 accused have been charge-sheeted

Rao has been in jail for about 22 months and had earlier approached the special NIA court, seeking bail on medical grounds and the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

On June 26, the NIA court rejected his plea on the ground that he has been booked under stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), following which he moved the high court.

The poet and nine other activists have been arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, which was initially probed by the Pune Police and later transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in January 2020.

The case related to alleged inflammatory speeches made at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017, which the police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial.

The police have also claimed the conclave was organised by people with alleged Maoist links.

The FIR was registered against Sarith Kumar, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair and Fazil Fareed, the four persons allegedly involved in the case.

The case involved the smuggling of 30 kg of gold addressed to a Middle East consulate in Thiruvananthapuram via the Trivandrum airport.

The NIA has charged them with offenses under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act(UAPA). The sections deal with raising funds for terrorist acts and conspiracy for terrorist activities. The NIA will probe whether the gold smuggling was linked to activities that threaten national security.

According to the NIA, the money from the smuggled gold can be linked to be used for terrorist activities. It will be one of the first cases in the NIA’s history in which the agency is entrusted to probe gold smuggling activities.

Meanwhile, the customs which made the seizure has started the interrogation of Sarith at their office in Kochi. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences) on Thursday granted custody of him till July 15. The NIA will produce him at the NIA court after July 15.
