BBC reports that lawmakers are expected to bring up a resolution asking Mr.Pence to invoke 25th amendment to declare the president unfit for office. Mr Trump could become the only president in US history to have been impeached twice.

Mr Pence is said to opposite the idea.

If he refuses, Democrats will vote to impeach Mr Trump who had urged supporters to march on the Capitol.

Donald Trump is due to leave office on January 20, when Democrat Joe Biden will be sworn in as president. Mr President has said he will not attend Mr Biden’s swearing-in ceremony.

House Democrats have vowed to move quickly with impeachment. To impeach, in this context, means to bring charges in Congress, and Ms Pelosi said Democrats could introduce a charge of “incitement of insurrection” against Mr Trump.

Ms Pelosi wrote to lawmakers saying the House of Representatives would present a resolution on Monday to formally request that Mr Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which would allow Mr Pence to remove Mr Trump from the White House and become acting president.

The House could vote on the resolution on Tuesday. After that, Mr Pence and the cabinet would be given 24 hours to act before the House’s potential move toward impeachment.

“We will act with urgency because this president represents an imminent threat to both,” Ms Pelosi said in her letter on January 10. “The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”

The aftershocks of the breaching of the US Capitol still lingers as a deep trauma after new horrific details about the last week’s outrage emerged, suggesting that an even worse tragedy was only narrowly averted.

The Republican President has been accused by Democrats and an increasing number of members of Republicans over the riot. Five people died in the attack, including a Capitol police officer.

Mr Trump is also banned from several social media platforms, including Twitter, on January 8.

India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, accepted the award on behalf of PM Modi from the US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien at the White House.

“The President of the United States of America conferred the highest decoration, The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 December 2020. The award is in recognition of the Prime Minister’s steadfast leadership and vision for India’s emergence as a global power, and exemplary contribution made by him for the advancement of the IndiaUnited States strategic partnership and promoting global peace and prosperity,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement

The award was also presented to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

The Legion of Merit, instituted in 1942 by former U.S President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces and also members of foreign (i.e., non-U.S.) armed forces and sometimes heads of state or government.

The award is presented to foreign recipients in four categories: Chief Commander, Commander, Officer and Legionnaire. Other Indians who have won the award include Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa who received the Legion of Merit (Degree: Chief Commander) in 1949 from then U.S. President Harry S. Truman.

Hours earlier, Trump’s medical team reported that his blood oxygen level dropped suddenly twice in recent days and that they gave him a steroid typically only recommended for the critical patients.
The doctors also said Trump’s health is improving and that he could be discharged as early as Monday. Yet new disclosures about his treatment raise concern that his condition is more serious than what the American public has been told.

In a video released on Twitter around the same time, Trump said he’s “learned a lot” about the coronavirus while undergoing treatment. “This is the real school,” he said. “And I get it. And I understand it.” His outing, he said, was meant to “pay a little surprise” to his supporters.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Trump has downplayed the risks of the virus. Despite World Health Organisation and Center of Diseases Control repeatedly issues warnings on the prevention, Trump ignored it all and even mocked the use of mask. The first time Trump was spotted wearing a mask in public was in July when the pandemic had already affected 3.2 million Americans.

The president said this week that he will announce his pick to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg and various US media said it would be the 48-year-old conservative judge. If Amy Coney is confirmed the court would shift to a 6-3 conservative majority.

Asked by journalists if Barrett will indeed be nominated, Trump responded: “I haven’t said that.”
But he added that he had already made a decision “in my own mind” and that Barrett is “outstanding.”

Democratic opponents, led by presidential candidate Joe Biden, have demanded that Republicans back off on replacing liberal icon Ginsburg — who died last week — until after the November 3 election, after it’s determined whether Trump will get a second term.

Leaders of the Republican majority in the Senate, which is tasked with confirming Supreme Court nominees, said they have enough support to hold a vote on the nomination either before the election or at worst during the “lame duck” session between the election and the inauguration of the next president in January.

“We will certainly do that this year,” Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said.

Barrett, a law professor, was only appointed to the bench for the first time in 2017. A deeply conservative Catholic, she is considered hostile to abortion rights — a key issue for many Republicans.
