Muscat : Set to take place in Muscat this October, the 2025 edition of the Youth Ambassadors Programme aims to enhance youth engagement and build their leadership and diplomatic skills, aligning with the objectives of Oman’s Tenth Five-Year Plan, which prioritizes youth empowerment and participation in global affairs.

Following the success of its second edition in 2024—which trained 100 young men and women in diplomacy and leadership—the programme continues to serve as a vital platform for connecting Omani youth with international organizations and forums. Participants gained valuable insights into the core principles and mechanisms of the United Nations, boosting their ability to contribute to both regional and global dialogues.

Hilal bin Saif Al Siyabi, Director General of Youth at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, stated that the Youth Ambassadors Programme stands as a flagship annual initiative reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to youth development. He noted that the increasing number of applicants, from 75 participants in the first edition to 100 in the second, reflects its growing popularity and impact.

For 2025, the programme targets 120 participants, with 21 seats allocated to youth from Gulf and Arab countries—most of which have already expressed initial approval to join. The expanded cohort aims to foster deeper cross-cultural dialogue and international collaboration.

Key highlights of the 2025 edition include:

High-level meetings between youth and diplomatic leaders

Training sessions conducted in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

A Model United Nations (MUN) simulation exercise

Opportunities to represent Oman at regional and international events

The Model United Nations simulation will bring together approximately 100 young participants alongside representatives from government entities, private sector organizations, academia, international bodies, and entrepreneurs. During the simulation, participants will role-play as diplomats representing various countries within simulated UN bodies such as the General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council.

Through structured debates, negotiations, and resolution drafting, participants will address pressing global issues affecting youth—including peace and security, human rights, climate change, food security, and economic development. The sessions will strictly follow official UN procedural rules, offering participants a realistic and enriching diplomatic experience.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must be Omani nationals aged 18 to 29, in good health, and committed to fully engaging with the programme’s activities and schedules. Preference will be given to individuals who have not participated in previous editions. The initial phase of selection will be conducted electronically.

The Ministry has also emphasized fair representation across all governorates based on data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information and aims to maintain gender balance among participants. Applicants are required to complete all questions in the registration form to be considered for the selection process.

Dubai: ADNOC Gas has entered into a 10-year agreement to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India’s Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). Under the terms of the deal, the UAE-based energy giant will deliver 0.5 million metric tonnes of LNG annually.

This marks the third major supply agreement ADNOC Gas has signed with a leading Indian energy company in the past 12 months. The company already supplies LNG to Indian Oil Corporation and GAIL India, reinforcing its role in supporting India’s energy security.

In a statement, ADNOC Gas emphasized that the agreement further strengthens its global presence, particularly in the high-demand Asian LNG market.

Fatema Al Nuaimi, CEO of ADNOC Gas, stated:
“This milestone highlights ADNOC Gas’ capability to reliably meet the growing global demand for LNG and supports India’s goal to raise the share of natural gas to 15% of its primary energy mix by 2030.”

The LNG for HPCL will be supplied from ADNOC Gas’ Das Island liquefaction facility, which currently has a production capacity of 6 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa).

Das Island is one of the world’s longest-operating LNG plants and has shipped more than 3,500 LNG cargoes globally since it began operations.

Joseph Maliakan

In a great relief to political, social and human rights activists in the country who have been alarmed at the shrinking democratic space for protests specialy in the National Capital Delhi, the Supreme Court on 31st July 2025 quashed a First Information Report ( FIR ) registered against Telungu actor and film producer Mohan Manchu Babu and his son Vardhan Babu. The FIR was filed against them in connection with a protest rally held in 2019 on the issue of non-payment of student fee reimbursements in Andhra Pradesh.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and K. V. Viswanathan quashed FIR setting aside the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s refusal to quash the criminal proceedings against Mohan Manchu Babu and his son.

” The appllents were exercising their Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression and to Assemble Peacefully. Therefore , no purpose will be served by continuing the prosecution , ” the court order said.

Only on 1st July 2025 several political parties and progressive and democratic organisations got together and held a joint dharna organised by the Delhi Committee of CPI ( ML ) at Jantar Mantar against shrinking space for PROTEST in the capital. The gathering was addressed , among others , by CPM ( ML ) Delhi spokesperson Comrade Mrigank, Nadita Narain of Democratic Teachers Front ( DTF ) and N.D. Pancholi veteran leader of People’s Union for Civil Liberties ( PUCL ).

There was a time when all protest programmes , dharnas, rallies and public meetings in Delhi were organised at the sprawling Boat Club lawns where there was ample breathing space for the aggrieved protesters as well as for the police force and the reporters , including the present writer covering events. One of the famous sit ins at the India Gate lawns this reporter covered was the farmers agitation led by Kisan leader Mahinder Singh Tikait. While covering the event I developed a special bond with the farmers leader and that came in handy while covering the recent farmers’ agitation against the infamous farmers ‘ reform’ Acts.

The shifting of the protest site from Boat Club to the Jantar Mantar took place some time in the late 80s may be 1988 or 1989 , around that time there was a massive dharna by the Anganwadi workers demanding survival wages which this reporter covered for the Indian Express.

Even though Jantar Mantar is the officially designated protest site nobody is free to protest at the site at will. The Delhi Police , which is responsible for law and order in the capital is insisting that a minimum 10 days notice is a must to hold any dharna, rally or meeting at the Jantar Mantar. And through out the New Delhi district in which most of the Union goverment offices and the state goverment guest houses and offices are located prohibitory orders are in force on a permanent basis and permission for protest events are given reluctantly after inordinate delay.

Gradually , peaceful gathering in industrial areas and other workplaces in Delhi are also being brought under highly restrictive regimes and permission for protest programmes are outrightly denied. Jantar Mantar itself has been converted in to barricaded highly monitored zone.

Petitions and memorandums addressed to people in power can no more be submitted directly by the protesters to the concerned authorities, the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Chief Minister, Commissioner of Police or Municipal Commissioner. The petitions have to be submitted to the security officer on the spot who will forward them to the concerned authority. The meeting demanded that Section 144 be lifted from the New Delhi District and people should be free to hold protest programmes with a simple notice to the police without waiting for permissions.

The case against Mohan Babu and his sons arose from a protest held on 22nd March 2019 led by Mohan Babu demanding release of pending student fee reimbursement funds . The protesters raised slogans against the then government for not granting students’ fee reimbursement to Sri Vidyaniketan Educational Institutions of which Mohan Babu is the Chairman.

The complaint was registered by then Model Code of Conduct Officer ( elections were due to be held at that time ) alleging that the protest involved a rally and dharna which obstructed traffic for four hours . Based on the complaint the police registered FIR under Sections 290, 341, 171-F read with 34 of the IPC and Section 34 of the Police Act , 1861.

Observing that none of the offences charged against the appellants is made out, the judgement authored by Justice Nagarathna said: ” A reading of the FIR and the chargesheet neither discloses any act committed or illegal commission that caused common injury , danger, annoyance to the public or interference with their public rights , nor do they disclose any voluntary obstruction to a person that prevents them from proceeding in any direction that they have a right to proceed in .

” Further they do not disclose material to suggest that there was any undue influence at elections , impersonation at elections or any act committed with the intention to interfere with the free exercise of electoral rights.

” Further they do not suggest that any act was committed on a road or in an open place within the limits of a town that caused inconvenience , annoyance or paused a risk of danger or injury or damage to the public , and do not disclose any of the eight specified actions under Section 34 of the Police Act.,1861.

” Therefore , even if the case of the respondent -State is accepted at its face value , it cannot be concluded that the appellants , while conducting the rally and dharna , engaged in any form of obstruction of the road in a manner that led to the offences alleged .” Justice Nagrathna concluded!

By Joseph Maiakan
The Enforcement Directorate ( ED ) the long arm of the Modi government extensively deployed for
disciplining dissenting political opponents conducted 3010 raids between 2014 and 2022 ( Eight years ) ,
as against 112 raids carried out between 2004 and 2014 , ten years of the United Progressive Alliance (
UPA ) rule.
ED raids target financial crimes like money laundering , violation of foreign exchange regulations,
Foreign Exchange Regulation Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act ( FERA and FEMA ) and cases
involving fugitive economic offenders. The objective is to detect, investigate and prosecute individuals
and institutions involved in financial crimes and to recover the proceeds of crime.
And consequently , the ED has the power to conduct searches, seize assets , attach properties and make
arrests in connection with the offences they investigate. It could raid a business suspected of laundering
money through shell companies or a person suspected of violating FEMA by illegally transferring money
abroad.
Among the most famous people raided by the ED are Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, in the National
Herald ( newspaper ) case followed by Bhupinder Singh Honey, nephew of former Punjab Chief Minister
, in an illegal sand mining case. Honey was also arrested in the case. The ED siezed more than Rs. 10
crore , gold worth Rs.21 lakhs and Rolex watch worth Rs.12 laks from the residence of Honey.
Other prominent people raided were IAS officer Pooja Singhal , an aide of the Jharkhand Chief Minister
Hemant Soren , Partha Chatterjee former West Bengal Education Minister and his aide Aprita
Mukherjee. The Minister was also arrested following the ‘ recovery ‘ of Rs.21 crore in cash from the
residence of Arpita Mukherjee.
Arm Admi Party lader and Delhi’s Health Minister Satyender Jain was arrested by the ED in May 2018
under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act ( PMLA ) after the CBI registered an FIR
against him in a disproportionate asset caseon 24 August 2017.
Other prominent people arrested by the ED are Karti Chidambaram Congress Member of Parliament and
son of former Home Minister P. Chitambaram in the Chinese Visa case, Shiv Sena M.P. Sanjay Raut ,
Sanjay Chhbria and Avinash Bhosale in the Yes Bank – DHFL case , Maharashtra Minister and prominent
Nationalist Congress Party leader Nawab Malik for his alleged link with fugitive gangster leader Dawood
Ibrahim’s D-Company . The ED also arrested former Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejeriwal and Deputy
Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the alleged liquor scam while in office . It also arrested K. Kavitha
daughter of former Chief Minister of Telengana K. Chandrashekhar Rao in the scam.
The ED also filed a supplementary chargesheet against former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmer
Farooq Abdullah in connection with the Jammu and Kashmer Cricket Association ( JKCA ) fund scam !

Besides these the ED in February 2024 attached Rs.1.17 crore of, Wahington Post Columnist Rana Ayyub
in a money laundering case . The ED charged her of misusing donations for personal expenses.
The ED’s unbriddled more than a decade old run came to an abrupt halt on 21 July 2025 , when a
Supreme Court bench comprising the Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran
asked The ED why it was being used for ” political battles ” and dismissed ED’s appeal against the
Karnataka High Court quashing the summons against Karnataka Chief Minister Sitaramaiah’s wife B. M.
Parwati and State Minister Byrathi Suresh. The summons was issued in connection with the alleged
illegal allotment of sites by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority ( MUDA ).
While hearing matter the Chief Justice of India B. R.Gavai told the Additional Solicitor General ( ASG ) S.
V. Raju ” Mr. Raju , please don’t ask us to open our mouths. Otherwise , we will be forced to make some
haarsh coments about the ED. Unfortunately , I have some experience in Maharashtra. You do not
perpetuate this violence across the country now. Let the political battles be fought before the
electorate. Why are you being used as a tool ? “
Meanwhile, in a severe indictment of the ED, the Madras High Court in a separate case has said that the
ED can take action only upon the existence of a predicate offence and it cannot conduct investigations
on its own.
A bench of the Justices M.S. Ramesh and V. Laxminarayanan observed that the ED cannot act like a
super cop and investigate anything and everything that came to its notice. There should be a ” criminal
activity ” which attracts schedule of the PMLA , and on account of such criminal activity there should
have been ” proceeds of crime ” .It is only then the jurisdiction of ED commences the court said.
There must be criminal activity coming within the schedule of the Act alongwith the presence of the
proceeds of the crime then only the ED will have jurisdiction to start a probe. If the agency was allowed
to conduct an investigation merely on coming to know about any activity , the ED would be conducting
roving enquiry the court added.
“‘ The essential ingredient for the ED to seize jurisdiction is the presence of a predicate offence. It is like
a limpet mine attached to a ship. If there is no ship , the limpet cannot work. The ship is the predicate
offence and ” proceeds of crime ” . The ED is not a loitering munition or drone to attack at will on any
criminal activity, ” the court pointed out.
The court further explained that as per Section 66 ( 2 ) of the PMLA, if the ED comes across a violation of
law during the course of an investigation , it cannot assume the role of an investigating agency and
investigate those offences also.
In this context, it is pertinent to mention a remark made by Justice Ramesh in June 2025 that the courts
often term the PMLA 2002 as an ” evolving legislation ” which throws up new legal questions , but it is
actually the ” officials of the ED who are evolving day by day by EXPANDING their POWERS ! “

Muscat: The Indian School Al Seeb (ISAS) community is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its most cherished teachers, Ms. Lekha Jackson, who passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 53.

A passionate music educator and devoted mentor, Ms. Jackson made a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues during her long and dedicated tenure at the school. She joined ISAS on August 11, 2006, and over the past 19 years, became a pillar of the institution — admired for her creativity, warmth, and unwavering dedication to her students’ growth, both academic and personal.

In February 2025, Ms. Jackson was diagnosed with cancer and returned to India for treatment. Despite her illness, she remained hopeful and stayed closely connected with her ISAS family, who continued to offer love, support, and prayers.

Dubai: Property token investments are rapidly gaining popularity among investors based in the UAE — with tokens often being sold out within minutes. But a key question looms: Will these token-based investments be subject to VAT?

The answer lies in how the tokens are legally classified — whether as real estate assets or virtual assets under UAE law.

“If classified as real estate, commercial tokens may be subject to 5% VAT, while residential tokens could be exempt,” said Vlad Skibunov, Partner at Dhruva Consultants.

On the other hand, if treated as virtual assets, the issuance and secondary trading of tokens may fall under the VAT regime applicable to financial services, potentially qualifying for exemption or zero-rating.

Rental Income and Platform Fees Also Under Scrutiny

As Skibunov explains, rental income generated from tokenized properties would add to investor returns. Therefore, it’s important to determine whether such income and platform service fees fall under real estate transactions or financial services for VAT purposes.

Crypto Investments Currently Outside UAE Tax Scope

The UAE government recently confirmed that virtual asset investments like Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will not be taxed, which has further fueled interest in the crypto sector. Property tokenization is now becoming a part of this growing investment mix.

Advisory to Developers and Investors

“Developers and buyers must factor VAT obligations into their agreements from the outset,” Skibunov emphasized. This would help avoid unexpected costs and ensure full legal compliance.

Dubai: Abu Dhabi-based investment powerhouse International Holding Company (IHC) has acquired SME financing platform eFunder, rebranding it as ‘Zelo’ as part of its strategy to expand alternative lending options for small and mid-sized businesses in the region.

Zelo, which originally launched in August 2020, offers receivables-based financing to help SMEs bridge working capital gaps. The platform provides digital-first liquidity solutions by converting approved invoices into cash within 24 to 48 hours, offering a much-needed alternative to traditional banking channels.

A Lifeline for SMEs

The acquisition comes at a critical time when SMEs across the UAE and Saudi Arabia continue to face delays of 60 to 120 days in receiving payments on approved invoices—hindering their cash flow and limiting operational flexibility.

“While SMEs represent over 95% of the UAE’s registered businesses and contribute more than half of the national GDP, access to timely financing remains a major challenge,” said IHC in a statement.

“Zelo is addressing this gap by offering fast, invoice-backed loans that empower business continuity and growth.”

IHC’s Strategic Move

Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of IHC, emphasized the importance of this move:

“SMEs are the backbone of a diversified and future-ready economy. Through our acquisition of Zelo, we’re proud to back a platform that removes one of the biggest barriers facing SMEs—timely access to working capital.”

Private Credit Gaining Ground

With bank lending rates still elevated, private credit has become increasingly important for businesses of all sizes. In a similar development, Sukna Capital in Saudi Arabia launched a new fund this week to expand alternative financing options for SMEs and startups.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region currently faces an estimated $250 billion SME credit gap, making platforms like Zelo instrumental in addressing this financial shortfall.

Dubai: Indian pharmaceutical companies—particularly those with substantial exports to the US—have come under sharp investor focus following the latest tariff warning issued by US President Donald Trump. The proposed move includes a steep 200% import duty on pharmaceutical shipments to the US.

While the tariff threat isn’t aimed specifically at Indian firms, it has nonetheless triggered serious concern among major Indian pharma exporters and their shareholders.
“Several top Indian pharmaceutical companies—such as Syngene, Gland Pharma, Biocon, Dr. Reddy’s, Zydus Lifesciences, and Aurobindo—generate over 40% of their total revenues from the US market,” said Milan Vaishnav, founder of ChartWizard.ae.
“This level of dependence makes them particularly vulnerable to any sudden trade-related policy shifts,” he added.

Market Reaction and Investor Anxiety

India’s benchmark Sensex index showed only a modest decline in early trading, down by 141 points or 0.17% as of 9 a.m. UAE time. However, investor unease is evident—especially among UAE-based NRIs with sizable holdings in Indian equities, particularly in pharma stocks.

India is currently progressing toward a comprehensive trade agreement with the US, which could ease overall tariff burdens. However, it remains unclear whether Indian pharmaceutical exports will be included in the agreement’s scope.

“Indian generic medicines account for a significant share of affordable drugs for American consumers, playing a key role in reducing healthcare costs,” Vaishnav noted.
“Implementing such punitive tariffs could disrupt global pharmaceutical supply chains and result in higher drug prices for US patients.”

He warned that both countries have a strategic healthcare partnership at stake, and undermining it could have far-reaching implications for the industry and public health.

Performance of Key Pharma Stocks

So far in 2025, the stock performance of Indian pharma firms heavily reliant on US exports has been underwhelming:

Biocon: +5.87% YTD

Gland Pharma: +4.73% YTD

Zydus Lifesciences: Flat

Aurobindo Pharma: –14.87% YTD

Syngene: –25.46% YTD

This lackluster performance highlights broader investor caution amid growing geopolitical and trade uncertainties, especially as US policy continues to evolve during an election year.

Abu Dhabi: Grade 12 students across the UAE must now undergo a mandatory medical fitness examination to secure university admissions—both within the country and abroad.

The University Medical Fitness Examination service enables students applying to UAE universities or international scholarship programmes to obtain a medical fitness certificate after completing a comprehensive health check-up. This includes a risk assessment and various laboratory investigations.

Fast-Track Results Available

For those opting for the express service, test results are delivered within 24 hours. Standard service users typically receive results within 48 hours.

Service Available at 41 Centers Across Six Emirates

The Emirates Health Services (EHS) has rolled out this service at 41 primary healthcare centres across six emirates—Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. The service supports students enrolling in local universities and those applying for international scholarships.

The breakdown of available centers is as follows:

Dubai – 3 centres

Sharjah – 15 centres

Ajman – 4 centres

Umm Al Quwain – 4 centres

Ras Al Khaimah – 7 centres

Fujairah – 8 centres

Ensuring Student Health and Safety

Medical fitness examinations are a requirement for university admission, especially for first-time applicants. These evaluations ensure that students are in good health and do not suffer from medical conditions that could hinder academic performance or endanger others. They also help detect infectious diseases early and identify those who may need special medical care or academic support.

How to Apply for the Service

Students can apply for the University Medical Fitness Examination through the EHS website (www.ehs.gov.ae) or the EHS mobile app, using their UAE Pass (digital ID linked to their Emirates ID).

Application Steps:

Log in with UAE Pass.

Fill in and submit your medical history digitally (paper forms are not accepted).

Pay the service fee of AED 250 through the app or website.

Book the earliest available appointment.

Visit the assigned healthcare centre for the required tests.

Once the laboratory tests and health risk assessments are completed, the medical fitness certificate will be issued electronically within three working days via the EHS platform.

Expatriate Use for Residency Purposes

The service also caters to expatriates applying for or renewing UAE residence permits. A medical fitness certificate, confirming the absence of infectious diseases, is a prerequisite for visa approval.

What Does the Medical Fitness Test for Residency Include?

Standard medical fitness screenings for UAE visa purposes involve testing for:

Hepatitis B and C

HIV/AIDS

Leprosy

Syphilis

Tuberculosis

Tests include a physical examination (if required) and blood samples for lab analysis.

Diseases That Disqualify UAE Residency Applicants

As per the Ministry of Health’s guidelines, individuals diagnosed with certain infectious diseases are ineligible for UAE residency. These include:

HIV/AIDS

Hepatitis B and C

Tuberculosis

Applicants found to have any of these conditions are denied a medical fitness certificate and are subject to repatriation procedures.

Dubai: Kuwait Agency to Accept Applications from Foreign Wives of Stateless Citizens. The Central Agency for Remedying Illegal Residents’ Status in Kuwait — the government body overseeing matters related to stateless individuals, commonly known as the Bidoon — has announced a new policy allowing foreign wives of certain Kuwaiti citizens to apply for official recognition.

According to an official statement, the move covers two categories:

Foreign women married to Kuwaiti men who were never granted citizenship

Foreign wives who previously held Kuwaiti nationality but had it revoked and currently reside in the country without legal status

Though the agency has not yet disclosed specific eligibility requirements, documentation procedures, or the implications of the policy, the announcement marks a cautious step towards addressing the legal uncertainty faced by families connected to stateless Kuwaiti citizens.

This initiative is seen as part of a broader government effort to resolve long-standing residency and documentation challenges affecting the Bidoon population and others living in legally vulnerable conditions.

The issue of stateless individuals in Kuwait has attracted growing attention from human rights groups and international organizations in recent years. However, as of now, no further clarifications have been issued by the agency regarding the next steps.

Dubai ∙ UAE-based Al Futtaim Investment Group has officially announced its entry into the Kuwaiti real estate market with the launch of Kuwait Festival City, a large-scale venture that reflects the company’s growing regional footprint.

This strategic move comes in the wake of Kuwait’s recently approved Real Estate Developer Law and proposed reforms to enable mortgage financing by local banks — developments designed to attract foreign investment and accelerate housing solutions for Kuwaiti citizens.

With more than 100,000 families currently on the national housing waitlist, the Kuwaiti government is turning to public-private partnerships to fast-track development. Al Futtaim’s entry represents one of the most high-profile endorsements of this new investment environment.

Long-Term Commitment to Kuwait

Al Futtaim’s new venture was established through the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA) and is licensed to operate across a wide range of activities, including residential and commercial construction, project management, and urban development.

The company will be headquartered in Kuwait and operate under a 99-year renewable license, according to founding documents.

Known for creating integrated city concepts, Al Futtaim brings decades of experience in delivering vibrant, mixed-use communities. The group has already developed five master-planned projects across 11.8 million square meters, comprising 29,000+ residential units that accommodate over 114,000 residents.

Its portfolio includes iconic destinations such as Dubai Festival City, Ski Dubai, Magic Planet, and VOX Cinemas, showcasing its expertise in blending retail, leisure, and housing.

Kuwait’s Real Estate Sector in Transformation

Kuwait is currently reimagining its housing model, moving from traditional public housing systems to a new framework that empowers private developers. The Ministry of Housing has designated three mega residential projects — Sabriya, Nawaf Al Ahmad, and Khairan — expected to deliver around 170,000 housing units.

Under the new policy, private developers will construct homes exclusively for eligible Kuwaiti citizens, with pricing aligned to mortgage-based financing models to ensure long-term affordability.

The upcoming developments will feature flexible housing types, from compact villas to large plots over 1,000 sq. meters, with investment horizons extending beyond 30 years.

Kuwait’s Investment Landscape Expands

Foreign direct investment into Kuwait is steadily gaining traction. According to KDIPA, foreign investment inflows totaled KD 206.9 million last fiscal year, raising the cumulative total to KD 1.74 billion.

In the past year alone, 16 new foreign companies from 12 countries established operations in Kuwait. Currently, 95 global firms are active in sectors such as IT, insurance, healthcare, and, for the first time, agriculture.

European companies make up nearly 60% of all foreign investment, followed by firms from Asia (28.5%), North America (9.5%), and Africa (1.9%).

New Delhi ∙ Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi has made a remarkable leap in global aviation rankings, climbing to 9th place among the world’s busiest airports, as per the latest 2024 Airports Council International (ACI) report. This marks a significant improvement from its 10th position in 2023 and places IGIA ahead of global hubs such as Los Angeles, Paris, and New York.

Infrastructure and Innovation Drive Growth

Delhi Airport’s meteoric rise is credited to major infrastructure upgrades, strategic expansions, and passenger-focused tech innovations, which have streamlined operations and enhanced the travel experience.

One of the key innovations is the rollout of biometric registration kiosks for foreign nationals holding e-visas. These self-service kiosks — the first of their kind in India — have slashed immigration processing times by over 50%, reducing congestion and enabling smoother arrivals.

Phase 3A Expansion: Enhancing International Transfers

The Phase 3A expansion at Terminal 3 has nearly doubled the International-to-International (I-to-I) transfer space to 3,000 square meters. Enhancements include:

7 food and retail outlets (up from 1)

10 check-in counters (up from 6)

15 frisking booths (up from 11)

8 X-ray machines (up from 4)

This upgrade, combined with improved baggage systems and direct Metro connectivity, has significantly improved Delhi’s efficiency as a South Asian transit hub.

Global Connectivity: 153 Destinations

IGIA’s reach now extends to 153 cities — 81 domestic and 72 international — making it one of the world’s most connected airports. New routes include Phnom Penh, Bali, Calgary, Vancouver, Chicago O’Hare, and Tokyo Haneda, attracting both business and leisure travelers.

Surge in Passenger Traffic

In FY2024, Delhi Airport handled a record 73.7 million passengers, thanks to expanded operations by both Indian and global carriers. 60 foreign and 6 Indian airlines now operate from IGIA, with growing use of wide-body aircraft and increased international frequencies.

Strategic Vision and Global Impact

With a 7.8% year-on-year increase in traffic and 13.6% growth compared to pre-pandemic levels, Delhi has outperformed traditional aviation giants. Nearly half of all long-haul travelers from India now transit through IGIA.

Delhi Airport’s rise is seen as a blueprint for how visionary infrastructure, technology-driven services, and seamless connectivity can transform an airport into a global aviation leader.

Dubai : Indian expatriates in the UAE are enjoying a renewed window of opportunity as the Indian rupee continues its downward slide against the UAE dirham. The currency has dropped to the 23.36–23.40 range, continuing its depreciation from last Friday.

This decline led to a spike in remittances from the UAE and Saudi Arabia over the weekend, as non-resident Indians (NRIs) seized the chance to send money home at favorable rates.

What’s Behind the Rupee’s Fall?

The main factor impacting currency markets right now is the uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump’s ongoing global tariff strategies, including trade negotiations with India.

“Indian markets are watching the ‘deal or no-deal’ scenario closely,” said Neelesh Gopalan, Treasury Manager at a Dubai-based financial firm. “In the latter half of July, the dirham-rupee rate is forecast to stay above 23.4 and could even touch 23.5.”

Though this may concern some, it’s still more favorable for NRIs compared to earlier this year, when the rupee hovered around 23.0–23.2, with only occasional dips to 23.3. In mid-June, the rupee briefly fell to 23.62 during the Israel-Iran geopolitical tensions.

“The rupee may test 23.5 temporarily, but that’s likely to be short-lived,” said Subramanian Sharma, CEO of Greenback Advisory Services. “If recovery occurs, we could see a return to 23.3.”

What’s Next for NRIs?

Currency experts predict the rupee will trade in a range of 23.25 to 23.45 in the near term. However, any dip to 23.50 presents a potentially lucrative opportunity for Indian expats to remit funds home.

Dubai ∙ In a historic move, Kuwait has appointed women to its higher public prosecution office for the first time, marking a major step toward gender equality in the country’s traditionally male-dominated legal system.

The landmark appointments were part of a broader reshuffle initiated by Attorney General Saad Al Safran, which involved transferring several prosecutors from local and specialized positions to senior ranks within the prosecution office.

In a statement, the Public Prosecution described the inclusion of women as “a precedent recorded for the first time,” emphasizing that the promotions were based purely on merit and professional competence.

“This decision reflects the well-deserved confidence in Kuwaiti women and their vital role in the criminal justice system,” the statement said, highlighting the nation’s growing commitment to equal opportunity and female leadership in public service.

The move aligns with directives from the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who has called for increased representation of qualified Kuwaiti nationals, especially in vital sectors such as the judiciary.

In a parallel development, Badr Al Masaad, currently First Chief Prosecutor and Head of the Attorney General’s Technical Office, has been appointed to lead the higher prosecution body.

Bitcoin crossed the $120,000 mark for the first time, fueled by growing investor confidence and renewed momentum after months of sideways trading that had left skeptics questioning its direction.

The rally gained strength following the re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. President. After the initial surge, Bitcoin hovered around the $100,000 level for several months, as market sentiment was dampened by uncertainties surrounding Trump’s economic policies — despite his administration’s pro-crypto stance. Now, with broader risk assets like equities also reaching record highs, Bitcoin has resumed its upward trend.

“This shift signals a maturing perspective on Bitcoin — not merely a speculative asset, but a macro hedge and a structurally scarce store of value,” said George Mandres, senior trader at XBTO Trading LLC. “A surge in risk-on sentiment across equities, coupled with significant institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, has fueled this steady ascent, notably absent the sharp volatility of previous bull runs.”

Bitcoin rose as much as 1.9% to $121,344 and is now up roughly 30% since December. The world’s largest cryptocurrency more than doubled in value last year.

A key factor behind the recent rally was the forced liquidation of bearish crypto positions, with over $1 billion in short bets wiped out at the end of the week, according to data from Coinglass.

Investor excitement has also been bolstered by anticipation of “Crypto Week” in the U.S. Congress, where lawmakers are expected to debate and potentially vote on major cryptocurrency legislation.

Still, not all analysts are convinced the rally is sustainable. “In my view, this isn’t a macro-driven rally, but rather an isolated event,” said Nicolai Sondergaard, a research analyst at Nansen. “That said, recent U.S. policy developments such as fiscal expansion and expectations of further monetary easing have created a backdrop that is undeniably favorable for Bitcoin.”

—With assistance from Suvashree Ghosh.

Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has issued a new law aimed at streamlining and regulating contracting activities across the emirate.

The newly introduced legislation establishes a unified framework for the classification of contractors, linking their categorization to specific technical capabilities and operational capacity.

The law is expected to enhance transparency across the construction sector, foster better coordination among concerned authorities, and ensure a more consistent and efficient regulatory environment for developers, contractors, and related stakeholders.

Authorities believe that the move will support sustainable urban development while aligning construction practices with the emirate’s long-term economic and infrastructural goals.
