Based on the popular musical stage play version of Roald Dahl’s classic story, the film is a Netflix and Working Title project.

Thompson will play Miss Trunchbull, the cruel headmistress and antagonist of the piece, reported Entertainment Weekly.

The story follows the titular five-year-old girl, who uses her powers of telekinesis to overcome bullies, including her family and her school’s principal Miss Trunchbull, and protect her friends.

Child star Alisha Weir will essay the role of Matilda in the movie, which will also feature Captain Marvel actor Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, the kindly teacher who encourages Matilda and her telekinetic gifts.

Matthew Warchus, who directed the original play, will return to helm the feature adaptation.

Tony winner Dennis Kelly is also coming back to pen the screenplay.

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title will produce the project with Jon Finn, and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company and Netflix.

“You are by far the most excruciating, difficult, stubbornly obnoxious woman I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Washington’s character Malcolm declares in the trailer. “I fucking love you.” Later on, Malcolm tells her, “I love the way you see the world, Marie.”

As the two-and-a-half-minute trailer progresses, Marie comes to the conclusion, “You know what, Malcolm? I feel like once you know someone’s there for you and once you know they love you, you never actually think of them again. It’s not until you’re about to lose someone that you finally pay attention.”

The film follows a director’s relationship with his girlfriend was tested when they return home from a movie premiere and await responses from critics. According to the trailer, this is not a love story, this is a story of love.

Sam Levinson who directed the critically acclaimed series Euphoria helmed the project as writer and director.

Netflix acquired the film, which was shot on 35 mm with a small crew amid the COVID-19 pandemic, last September for $30 million following a bidding war between several distributors. The streamer plans to launch an Oscar campaign for the project.

The makers said that they are keen to release the film in theaters first in an aim to revive Tamil film industry. They didn’t deny that a popular OTT platform has approached them to buy the digital streaming rights of the film.

Producer Xavior Britto of XB Film Creations, in a statement, said, “As we continue to battle the pandemic, we hope you are all safe and doing fine. We understand and can feel the amount of excitement among the audience to celebrate our #Master in theatres. We await the Big Day to come, as much as you do. With lot of rumours surfacing in the past few days, we would like to clarify our stand on it. Though we have an offer from a reputed OTT service provider, we prefer to the theatrical release, which is the need of the hour for the industry to survive the on-going crisis. We also request the theatre owners to stand with us and provide their support for reviving the Tamil Film Industry. We hope to reach out to you soon, with the good news. Stay safe (sic).”

‘Master’ director Lokesh Kanagaraj, shared the statement on Twitter.

The film was supposed to hit the screens in April , but the lockdown to due to coronavirus pandemic pushed makers to push the release date.

It is reported that the distributor of the film, Seven Screen Studio’s Lalit Kumar has sold the streaming rights to Netflix. Netflix reportedly offered a huge amount to buy the rights of the film.

However, the maker’s are yet to decide upon the theatrical release of the movie.

A few months ago, the director of the Lokesh Kanagraj, said that they are waiting for reopening of theatres to release the film and denied the possibility of releasing Master on an OTT platform.

Master, produced by Xavier Britto, stars Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan, Andrea Jeremiah, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Arjun Das in the lead roles. Meanwhile, Vijay has started working on the pre-production of his 65th film. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film is likely to go on floors in February 2021, post Master release.

On the other hand, Gautham Menon’s big-budget movie ‘Dhruva Natchathiram’, starring Chiyaan Vikram is also gearing up for release. The Government of India issued an order on Wednesday, bringing digital or online media, films and audio-visual programmes, news and current affairs content under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Currently, there is no law or autonomous body governing digital content.
The development was announced in a gazette notification on Wednesday. The notification declared that the President has signed the order to include online films, digital news and current affairs content under the purview of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar

The Modi government had earlier taken the stand that it won’t curb freedom of the media, and Javadekar had stated that the Modi government won’t take any step that may curb media freedom. He also said that there should be some kind of regulation on over-the-top platforms, as there is for the print and electronic media and films as well.

The wait is finally over, as Gautham Vasudev Menon is apparently planning to release his most ambitious project ‘Dhruva Natchathiram’ on Netflix soon. The director gave updates about the movie’s current status in an Instagram video.

In the video, Gautham Menon revealed that the complete shooting of the movie is completed, and they are busy with the post-production works. According to the director, only two days of Vikram’s dubbing is remaining, and it will be completed soon.

Gautham also assured that the film will be released as soon as possible. Close sources to the movie revealed that the director is ready to release the film in the OTT platform, and in all probabilities, Netflix will stream the movie once the post-production works get completed.

Gautham Menon started the shooting of Dhruva Natchathiram in 2016. However, due to several reasons, the release of the movie got delayed, and it had literally disappointed fans of Vikram.

In the movie, Vikram will be seen playing the role of John, and Indian spy. The film is expected to be a high-voltage action thriller, and the director has shot action sequences in various foreign locales.

Apart from Vikram, Dhruva Natchathiram also stars Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, Vinayakan, Simran, R Parthiben, and Raadhika Sarathkumar in other prominent roles. Harris Jayaraj has composed the music for this film, while the cinematography is handled by Manoj Paramahamsa.

Netflix bags theatrical rights of One

The recent news about this movie is regarding the sale of its OTT rights. According to the latest updates, online streaming giant Netflix has bagged the OTT rights of this film. However, the exact amount for which the online platform acquired the rights of ‘One’ still remains unknown.

According to close sources to the movie, more than 90 percent shooting of ‘One’ is already completed. The crew is expected to resume the filming once the coronavirus lockdown measures get relaxed in the state.

In ‘One’, Mammootty will be playing the role of Kadakkal Chandran, the chief minister of Kerala.
