As per the deal, the four companies will collect lunar samples and dirt in the next few years and then sign the material over to Nasa for $1 to $15,000.

“I think it’s kind of amazing that we can buy lunar regolith from four companies for a total of $25,001,” news agency AFP quoted Phil McAlister, director of Nasa’s Commercial Spaceflight Division, as saying.

The contracts are with Lunar Outpost of Golden, Colorado for $1; ispace Japan of Tokyo for $5,000; ispace Europe of Luxembourg for $5,000; and Masten Space Systems of Mojave, California for $15,000.

The companies plan to carry out the collection during already-scheduled unmanned missions to the Moon in 2022 and 2023.

The firms are to collect a small amount of lunar soil known as regolith from the Moon and to provide imagery to Nasa of the collection and the collected material.

The lunar soil will then be transferred to Nasa and it will become the “sole property of Nasa for the agency’s use under the Artemis program”, AFP quoted.

However, it’s unclear if the material will be brought to Earth, a report in space.com quoted agency officials as saying.

Offcials further said that the funding is low because Nasa “is paying solely for the collected material, without footing the bill for any of the companies’ development costs.”

Under the Artemis program, Nasa plans to land a man and a woman on the Moon by 2024 and lay the groundwork for sustainable exploration and an eventual mission to Mars.

“The precedent is a very important part of what we’re doing today,” said Mike Gold, NASA’s acting associate administrator for international and interagency relations.

“We think it’s very important to establish the precedent that the private sector entities can extract, can take these resources but NASA can purchase and utilize them to fuel not only NASA’s activities, but a whole new dynamic era of public and private development and exploration on the Moon,” Gold was quoted as saying.

“We must learn to generate our own water, air and even fuel,” he said. “Living off the land will enable ambitious exploration activities that will result in awe inspiring science and unprecedented discoveries.”

Any lessons learned on the Moon would be crucial to an eventual mission to Mars.

The United States is seeking to establish a precedent because there is currently no international consensus on property rights in space and China and Russia have not reached an understanding with the United States on the subject.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty is vague but it deems outer space to be “not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”

NASA experts created a model projection of a COVID-free Earth atmosphere in 2020 keeping in account natural variations as well.

The model simulation and machine learning analysis showed an alternate reality version of 2020- one that did not experience any unexpected changes in human behaviour brought on by the pandemic.

The researchers received data from 46 countries with a total of 5,756 observation sites on the ground. The experts observed that in a city-level, 50 of the 61 cities show nitrogen dioxide reductions between 20-50%.

Wuhan in China, which was the first in the world to impose a strict lockdown after the COVID-19 outbreak originated there, showed the first reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions. The emission in Wuhan was 60% less than expected. Milan in Italy’s Lombardy, the worst-hit regions in Europe, also saw a 60% reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions.

New York, another worst hit city saw a 45% reduction in the pollution levels.

Meanwhile in India, a report released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the pollution levels in India were reduced by 24% in the pre-lockdown days of early March. During the nationwide lockdown, it further went down by almost 50%.

The process of bringing back samples from Mars will be a long one. The first part involves the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover launched in July. The rover is halfway on its path to the planet. The Perseverance Rover equipped with a coring drill and sample tubes will store the rocks in collection tubes after extraction.

Few of the rocks collected will then be picked up by ESA’s “fetch” rover. The next process includes the ESA rover delivering the rock samples to the NASA-provided MARS Ascent vehicle, which will launch into Mars’ orbit. The process doesn’t end there as again ESA would come into play. An ESA-provided Earth Return Orbiter will take these samples from the MARS Ascent vehicle and then bring them back to Earth sometime in the 2030s.

According to Starlink, the ultimate aim of the company is to deploy 42,000 satellites on the earth’s orbit. SpaceX claims that the aim of these Starlink satellites is to provide high-speed internet in all nooks of the world.

Even though Elon Musk’s Starlink project is receiving positive responses from all corners, a section of astronomers believes that this rise in the number of satellites could negatively affect stargazing, and may even trap humans on the earth.

A few months back, the Royal Astronomical Society had expressed their concern over the rising number of Starlink constellations in the low-earth orbit.

“The Royal Astronomical Society notes with concern the launch of the new SpaceX Starlink constellation of satellites into low-Earth orbit, and the potential impact of this and other programs on views of the night sky and on astronomical research. Increasing the number of satellites so significantly presents a challenge to ground-based astronomy,” said the Royal Astronomical Society, in a recent statement.

Several space scientists also suggest that thousands of satellites in the earth’s orbit may trap humans, and could even affect future space missions, as humans are now trying to broaden their horizon to emerge as a multi-planetary species.

“Now that we’ve found phosphine, we need to understand whether it’s true that it’s an indicator of life,” says Leonardo Testi, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany, was quoted as saying by Nature.

On 14 September, scientists revealed that they had found phosphine in Venus’s atmosphere, about 55 kilometres above the surface1, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array in Chile and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The radio data showed that light was being absorbed at millimetre wavelengths that corresponded to a phosphine concentration of 20 parts per billion in the atmosphere.

Astrobiologists have flagged phosphine — a toxic compound of hydrogen and phosphorus — as a possible signature for life on other planets, and it is made by some organisms on Earth. “Anaerobic life produces it quite happily,” says Clara Sousa-Silva, a molecular astrophysicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and co-author of the phosphine-detection study. But the gas should be broken down in Venus’s harsh, highly acidic atmosphere. That led the discovery team to conclude that there must be some mechanism replenishing the gas, hinting at either biological production or an unknown chemical process that scientists cannot yet explain. Researchers have tentatively suggested3 that in the region of the atmosphere where phosphine was found — away from the crushing pressures and scorching temperatures of the planet’s surface — some airborne microbes could survive.
Before seriously considering that possibility, scientists are eager to make sure that phosphine really is present on Venus. Not everyone is yet convinced by the team’s observation. That’s partly because the researchers identified only one absorption line for phosphine in their data, says Matthew Pasek, a cosmobiogeochemist at the University of South Florida in Tampa. “Someone else needs to confirm it.”

Astronomers are now hoping to follow up on the detection using other telescopes on Earth. “We are proposing to use two instruments,” says planetary scientist Jason Dittmann at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who plans to conduct observations with Sousa-Silva. One of the instruments is at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii; the other is on NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, a plane that carries a telescope.

Observations in the infrared and other parts of the spectrum will enable scientists to look for other absorption lines associated with phosphine, providing a way to verify its presence. They could also offer more data on where the phosphine is located, and how its levels vary over days and weeks. Dittmann’s team had hoped to observe Venus in July 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic has pushed its telescope time back. “We’re hopeful we’ll start getting data in the near future,” he says.

Away from Earth, other plans are afoot. Three missions are scheduled to fly close to Venus in the coming months: Europe and Japan’s BepiColombo spacecraft, on its way to Mercury, and the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter and NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, both on their way to the Sun.

Observations by these spacecraft are advantageous because they would not be constrained by Earth’s atmosphere. But the crafts’ instruments are designed to look at other things, such as the surface of Mercury or the Sun, so it’s not clear whether they have the right sensitivity to detect phosphine in the Venusian atmosphere.

BepiColombo has a slim chance of detecting the gas in a fly-by this October, and a better chance next August, with its infrared instrument. The Parker Solar Probe, too, might be able to make a detection, with an instrument designed to study solar particles. “It is a low probability, but I would not completely rule it out,” says Nour Raouafi, an astrophysicist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, who is the project scientist on the mission.

There is also a spacecraft currently orbiting Venus: Japan’s Akatsuki mission, which entered orbit in 2015 and is studying Venus’s weather and searching for volcanism. Although it lacks the instrumentation required to spot phosphine directly, it could help in other ways. “The atmosphere and the clouds are the platform for life,” says project scientist Takehiko Satoh, a planetary scientist at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in Sagamihara. “We can provide information about that.”

Future missions
More promising are likely to be missions still in development, which could be altered to support the detection of phosphine. The discovery strengthens the case for such missions, says Jörn Helbert at the German Aerospace Center, who is a member of the BepiColombo team.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has a Venus orbiter called Shukrayaan-1, planned to launch in 2025. The United States and Europe also are contemplating missions to Venus that could provide useful data on the planet’s potential habitability — or even directly search for signs of life.

In the meantime, if astronomers can confirm the detection of phosphine, they will want to rule out other plausible production methods before considering that it is being made by living organisms. That will include creating models to investigate non-biological routes of production, and conducting laboratory experiments to look for chemical pathways that were not considered in the initial study.
Only data can settle the debate.

The new study suggested that satellite-threatening debris in the high-earth orbit is not tracked closely enough, and it could negatively impact the functioning of satellites that are responsible for serving multifarious things on the earth that includes navigation, communication, and weather services.

Human-made trash has been steadily increasing in the orbit since the 1950s as it was during this time that humans started launching satellites. According to space experts, orbital debris comprises old, defunct satellites and, rockets that were used to take these satellites to the earth’s orbit.

“It’s important that we continue to observe the geosynchronous region with large telescopes wherever possible, to start to build up a more complete feel for the faint debris environment. With this survey, we’ve probed deeper than ever before, and still, the population appears to be climbing as our sensitivity limit is reached. While we’re dealing with small number statistics here, it’s unsurprising that we see many more small, faint objects than large, bright ones,” said James Blake, a PhD student at the University of Warwick Department of Physics and the lead author of the study.

And now, a team of scientists, using the data provided by China’s Chang’e 4 lander, has unveiled the space radiation level in earth’s natural satellite.

According to the new study report, the radiation in the Moon is two to three times higher than the radiation received in the International Space Station (ISS). This is mainly due to the partial protection ISS is receiving from the earth’s magnetosphere. Interestingly, the radiation received on the moon is 200 times higher when compared to the space radiation that hits the earth’s surface.

“The radiation of the Moon is between two and three times higher than what you have on the ISS (International Space Station). So that limits your stay to approximately two months on the surface of the Moon,” Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber, co-author of the study told a news agency.

The new study report comes at a time when the United States is planning to land humans on the moon in 2024. The study report is alarming, and it has made many people believe that NASA is putting the life of astronauts at risk by sending them to the moon again.

As the United States is planning for an upcoming Venusian mission, Dimitry Rogozin, head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos has claimed that Venus is a Russian planet, as the Soviet Union was the first and only country to land on the hostile planet.

Calling it the most paranormal UFO sighting, Waring argued that these energy beings usually come out of the clouds to monitor human activities.

As the probe orbited, it spotted a bright layer on the surface of Ceres. Now, a new study has found that this layer is basically salt deposits made up of sodium, carbon, and oxygen, that might have reached the surface of this dwarf planet from an underground ocean.

The new study report revealed that this underground ocean beneath the surface of Ceres could be located at least 25 miles deep, and it might be hundreds of miles wide. According to researchers who took part in this study, this geological process where salts reached the surface of the space body is still happening.

“In the case of Ceres, we know the liquid reservoir is a regional scale but we cannot tell for sure that it is global. However, what matters most is that there is liquid on a large scale,” said Carol Raymond, a researcher at NASA, Reuters reports.

As the presence of liquid water in the underground ocean of Ceres has been confirmed, experts now believe that it could also act as a first step to discover alien life that might be thriving at least in its microbial form in this dwarf planet.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA administrator also admitted that Ceres is one of the potential candidates where humans can search for alien life. Bridenstine, in one of his recent tweets, revealed that Ceres is the latest evidence that our solar system is filled with ancient habitable environments.

The Ground Control Team is monitoring the functions of the Probe to ensure that all systems are working properly.

It will take seven months to travel the 493 million km, it is expected to reach its Mar’s orbit in February 2021 marking the 50th anniversary of the UAE. The launch of the probe was delayed two time due to unstable weather conditions, the July 20th was chosen as the third launch date.

The Hope Probe team will communicate and share findings with the global Mars science community on key questions that no other mission has addressed before.

Once it enters Mars’ orbit in the first quarter of 2021, the Hope probe will mark the UAE’s 50th anniversary. The probe will travel 493 million kilometers into space in a journey that will take seven months, and will orbit the Red Planet for one full Martian year of 687 days to provide the first truly global picture of the Martian atmosphere. The Hope probe will be the first to study the Martian climate throughout daily and seasonal cycles. It will observe the weather phenomena in Mars such as the massive famous dust storms that have been known to engulf the Red Planet, as compared to the short and localized dust storms on earth.

The Mars Hope probe will examine the interaction between the upper and lower layers of the Martian atmosphere and causes of the Red Planet’s surface corrosion, as well as study why Mars is losing its upper atmosphere.

Exploring connections between today’s Martian weather and the ancient climate of the Red Planet will give deeper insights into the past and future of Earth and the potential of life on Mars and other distant planets.

The probe will gather and send back new Mars data to the Science Data Center in the UAE via different ground stations spread around the world. The data will be catalogued and analyzed by the Emirates Mars Mission science team, and shared for free with the international Mars science community as a service to human knowledge.

The insights and data gained from understanding the Martian climate will add new dimensions to human knowledge about how atmospheres work, which will help scientists and researchers evaluate distant worlds for conditions that might support life. Understanding the geographical and climate changes of Mars and the other planets will help us gain deeper insights to find solutions for key challenges facing mankind on earth.

Mysterious structure sparks debate

This bizarre discovery is being made by Scott C Waring, a self-styled UFO hunter who is currently based in Taiwan. According to Waring, this structure discovered on the moon could be most probably a bioengineered one, and he believes that advanced aliens are capable of doing this which humans cannot imagine.

“I believe this structure to be grown, a bioengineered structure. Most alien species are so advanced the don’t want to bother making things the old fashioned way, so growing their structures saves them time, time in which they could use doing other activities. Notice the wing on the top. The opening in the front. Its a structure but also a spaceship that can be moved from place to place,” wrote Waring on his website.

Waring also shared a video about the finding on YouTube, and people who watched the clip argue that the Taiwanese researcher has found something connected to aliens on the lunar surface.

Is Pareidolia misleading Waring?

This is not the first time that Waring is making such discoveries on the moon. In his career that is nearing two decades, Waring has spotted several anomalies on images taken by NASA from the Mars and the moon.

However, skeptics strongly believe that almost all findings made by Waring are examples of pareidolia. According to medical science, pareidolia is a unique capability of the human brain to figure out familiar figures on unknown patterns.

UFO video sparks debate

The video of this bizarre UFO incident was shared to YouTube by popular conspiracy theory channel The Hidden Underbelly 2.0. In the video, a strange UFO, with lights all over its body can be seen flying across the night skies in an eerie manner.

The video uploaded by the conspiracy theory channel soon caught the attention of alien enthusiasts, and they started claiming that extraterrestrial beings have visited the earth to monitor human activities. These extraterrestrial believers also claimed that NASA and the US government is intentionally covering up facts surrounding alien existence due to sinister reasons.

However, citing the short duration of the clip, skeptics assured that this clip apparently shot from Colombia is nothing but a manipulated hoax.

Are UFOs real?

In 2017, following an investigative report published in the New York Times, the Pentagon confirmed to have carried out a secret mission called the ‘Advanced Aerial Threat Identification Program’ (AATIP) to unveil the mysteries surrounding UFO sightings that happened in several US Naval bases.

NASA’s Center of Near-Earth Object Studies claims that this asteroid named 2011 ES4 is about 22 meters to 49 meters in diameter, and it is apparently screeching across the skies at a mindblowing speed of 18,253 miles per hour.

During the time of its close approach, this asteroid will be almost 2,38,000 miles away from the earth. Even though this distance is quite big in human terms, it is very short as per astronomical terms, considering the vastness of the space.

Even though the chance of a potential collision is pretty less, several factors like gravitational keyhole could attract the space rock to the earth’s atmosphere. Considering the small size of this asteroid, it may not reach the earth’s surface, but it could cause a mid-air explosion, very similar to the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor event which resulted in thousands of casualties and structural damage.

Why NASA is developing a planetary protection weapon?

Due to regular threats from space in the form of asteroids and meteors, NASA is currently developing a planetary defense weapon to deflect the original collision course trajectories of rogue rocks. NASA chief Jim Bridenstine has recently revealed that the space agency is committed to safeguarding other space bodies from contamination during upcoming probes including the much crucial Artemis mission.

According to experts, if humans introduce earthly microbes to distant planets during exploration, it will negatively impact our search of aliens that might be thriving in these space bodies.
