The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched a 50-over World Cup Super League to determine qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

The tournament is set to kickstart with a series between England and Ireland, scheduled in Southampton on July 30. The rest of the schedule is yet to be announced. India automatically qualifies for the World Cup because they are hosting the tournament.

The Super League will determine the other seven teams that will qualify for the World Cup, ICC said through a press release.

The league will feature 13 teams, the 12 ICC full members and the Netherlands who qualified by winning the World Cricket Super League in 2017-17. The Super League will see each side play four home and four way three-match series.

Each team gets 10 points for a win, five for a tie/no result/ abandonment and none for a loss.

Teams will be ranked according to total points earned across the eight series. There are criteria in place to separate two or more teams on equal points.

“The start of the Super League was delayed due to COVID-19. As part of our contingency planning, we continue to work with Members to find windows where the rescheduled qualifying series can be safely and practically rescheduled,” the ICC said.

England captain Eoin Morgan said the Super League fixture against Ireland marks the start of their journey for the 2023 edition.

After four months of months of anticipation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to postpone this year’s T20 World Cup that was scheduled to be held in Australia in October and November. The council arrived at a decision in a meeting held virtually on July 21. It also paves the way for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to host this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The ICC also renewed the dates of 2023 ODI World Cup in India from February- March to October- November with the final on November 26. The ICC took the decision so that additional time will be used to reschedule games (bilateral and domestic) that might be lost because of the pandemic and also ensure an appropriate qualification process.

This means that there will be three consecutive ICC World Cup years, T20 versions in 2021 and 2022 and 50-over version in 2023.

A decision on whether India continues to host the 2021 T20 World Cup or whether it will go to Australia will be taken later. Earlier, the ICC has threatened to pull back India’s hosting rights for the 2021 T20 World Cup unless the BCCI resolves a long- standing tax exemption issue with the Indian government.

The Board will also continue to evaluate the situation in relation to being able to stage the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021.

Now the BCCI can take a decision about conducting the money spinner tournament IPL after seeking the government permission. BCCI will take a decision during the IPL governing council meeting this week. It is said that BCCI’s contingency plan includes either a 43-day or 50-day closed- door IPL, starting September 26.

West Indies cricketers will wear a ‘Black Lives Matter’ logo on the collars of their jerseys during the upcoming three-Test series against England to protest against racism in sports and to raise awareness regarding equality.

Skipper Jason Holder, who has voiced his support to the cause, said in a statement on Sunday they arrived at the decision to wear the logo after much thought.

“We did not take our decision lightly. We know what it is for people to make judgments because of the colour of our skin, so we know what it feels like, this goes beyond the boundary. There must be equality and there must be unity. Until we get that as people, we cannot stop,” he said. “We have to find some way to have equal rights and people must not be viewed differently because of the colour of their skin or ethnic background.”

The ICC approved the logo, designed by Alisha Hosannah, is the same one which featured in the shirts of all 20 Premier League football clubs since the sport’s resumption earlier this month.

The West Indies players are likely to wear the shirts for the first time in this week’s four-day warm-up match at Emirates Old Trafford, starting on Monday. A three-match Test series between England and West Indies will mark international cricket’s resumption at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on July 8.
