Dubai: ADNOC Gas has entered into a 10-year agreement to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India’s Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). Under the terms of the deal, the UAE-based energy giant will deliver 0.5 million metric tonnes of LNG annually.

This marks the third major supply agreement ADNOC Gas has signed with a leading Indian energy company in the past 12 months. The company already supplies LNG to Indian Oil Corporation and GAIL India, reinforcing its role in supporting India’s energy security.

In a statement, ADNOC Gas emphasized that the agreement further strengthens its global presence, particularly in the high-demand Asian LNG market.

Fatema Al Nuaimi, CEO of ADNOC Gas, stated:
“This milestone highlights ADNOC Gas’ capability to reliably meet the growing global demand for LNG and supports India’s goal to raise the share of natural gas to 15% of its primary energy mix by 2030.”

The LNG for HPCL will be supplied from ADNOC Gas’ Das Island liquefaction facility, which currently has a production capacity of 6 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa).

Das Island is one of the world’s longest-operating LNG plants and has shipped more than 3,500 LNG cargoes globally since it began operations.

Dubai: Property token investments are rapidly gaining popularity among investors based in the UAE — with tokens often being sold out within minutes. But a key question looms: Will these token-based investments be subject to VAT?

The answer lies in how the tokens are legally classified — whether as real estate assets or virtual assets under UAE law.

“If classified as real estate, commercial tokens may be subject to 5% VAT, while residential tokens could be exempt,” said Vlad Skibunov, Partner at Dhruva Consultants.

On the other hand, if treated as virtual assets, the issuance and secondary trading of tokens may fall under the VAT regime applicable to financial services, potentially qualifying for exemption or zero-rating.

Rental Income and Platform Fees Also Under Scrutiny

As Skibunov explains, rental income generated from tokenized properties would add to investor returns. Therefore, it’s important to determine whether such income and platform service fees fall under real estate transactions or financial services for VAT purposes.

Crypto Investments Currently Outside UAE Tax Scope

The UAE government recently confirmed that virtual asset investments like Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will not be taxed, which has further fueled interest in the crypto sector. Property tokenization is now becoming a part of this growing investment mix.

Advisory to Developers and Investors

“Developers and buyers must factor VAT obligations into their agreements from the outset,” Skibunov emphasized. This would help avoid unexpected costs and ensure full legal compliance.

Dubai: Abu Dhabi-based investment powerhouse International Holding Company (IHC) has acquired SME financing platform eFunder, rebranding it as ‘Zelo’ as part of its strategy to expand alternative lending options for small and mid-sized businesses in the region.

Zelo, which originally launched in August 2020, offers receivables-based financing to help SMEs bridge working capital gaps. The platform provides digital-first liquidity solutions by converting approved invoices into cash within 24 to 48 hours, offering a much-needed alternative to traditional banking channels.

A Lifeline for SMEs

The acquisition comes at a critical time when SMEs across the UAE and Saudi Arabia continue to face delays of 60 to 120 days in receiving payments on approved invoices—hindering their cash flow and limiting operational flexibility.

“While SMEs represent over 95% of the UAE’s registered businesses and contribute more than half of the national GDP, access to timely financing remains a major challenge,” said IHC in a statement.

“Zelo is addressing this gap by offering fast, invoice-backed loans that empower business continuity and growth.”

IHC’s Strategic Move

Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of IHC, emphasized the importance of this move:

“SMEs are the backbone of a diversified and future-ready economy. Through our acquisition of Zelo, we’re proud to back a platform that removes one of the biggest barriers facing SMEs—timely access to working capital.”

Private Credit Gaining Ground

With bank lending rates still elevated, private credit has become increasingly important for businesses of all sizes. In a similar development, Sukna Capital in Saudi Arabia launched a new fund this week to expand alternative financing options for SMEs and startups.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region currently faces an estimated $250 billion SME credit gap, making platforms like Zelo instrumental in addressing this financial shortfall.

Dubai: Indian pharmaceutical companies—particularly those with substantial exports to the US—have come under sharp investor focus following the latest tariff warning issued by US President Donald Trump. The proposed move includes a steep 200% import duty on pharmaceutical shipments to the US.

While the tariff threat isn’t aimed specifically at Indian firms, it has nonetheless triggered serious concern among major Indian pharma exporters and their shareholders.
“Several top Indian pharmaceutical companies—such as Syngene, Gland Pharma, Biocon, Dr. Reddy’s, Zydus Lifesciences, and Aurobindo—generate over 40% of their total revenues from the US market,” said Milan Vaishnav, founder of ChartWizard.ae.
“This level of dependence makes them particularly vulnerable to any sudden trade-related policy shifts,” he added.

Market Reaction and Investor Anxiety

India’s benchmark Sensex index showed only a modest decline in early trading, down by 141 points or 0.17% as of 9 a.m. UAE time. However, investor unease is evident—especially among UAE-based NRIs with sizable holdings in Indian equities, particularly in pharma stocks.

India is currently progressing toward a comprehensive trade agreement with the US, which could ease overall tariff burdens. However, it remains unclear whether Indian pharmaceutical exports will be included in the agreement’s scope.

“Indian generic medicines account for a significant share of affordable drugs for American consumers, playing a key role in reducing healthcare costs,” Vaishnav noted.
“Implementing such punitive tariffs could disrupt global pharmaceutical supply chains and result in higher drug prices for US patients.”

He warned that both countries have a strategic healthcare partnership at stake, and undermining it could have far-reaching implications for the industry and public health.

Performance of Key Pharma Stocks

So far in 2025, the stock performance of Indian pharma firms heavily reliant on US exports has been underwhelming:

Biocon: +5.87% YTD

Gland Pharma: +4.73% YTD

Zydus Lifesciences: Flat

Aurobindo Pharma: –14.87% YTD

Syngene: –25.46% YTD

This lackluster performance highlights broader investor caution amid growing geopolitical and trade uncertainties, especially as US policy continues to evolve during an election year.

Dubai: Kuwait Agency to Accept Applications from Foreign Wives of Stateless Citizens. The Central Agency for Remedying Illegal Residents’ Status in Kuwait — the government body overseeing matters related to stateless individuals, commonly known as the Bidoon — has announced a new policy allowing foreign wives of certain Kuwaiti citizens to apply for official recognition.

According to an official statement, the move covers two categories:

Foreign women married to Kuwaiti men who were never granted citizenship

Foreign wives who previously held Kuwaiti nationality but had it revoked and currently reside in the country without legal status

Though the agency has not yet disclosed specific eligibility requirements, documentation procedures, or the implications of the policy, the announcement marks a cautious step towards addressing the legal uncertainty faced by families connected to stateless Kuwaiti citizens.

This initiative is seen as part of a broader government effort to resolve long-standing residency and documentation challenges affecting the Bidoon population and others living in legally vulnerable conditions.

The issue of stateless individuals in Kuwait has attracted growing attention from human rights groups and international organizations in recent years. However, as of now, no further clarifications have been issued by the agency regarding the next steps.

Dubai ∙ UAE-based Al Futtaim Investment Group has officially announced its entry into the Kuwaiti real estate market with the launch of Kuwait Festival City, a large-scale venture that reflects the company’s growing regional footprint.

This strategic move comes in the wake of Kuwait’s recently approved Real Estate Developer Law and proposed reforms to enable mortgage financing by local banks — developments designed to attract foreign investment and accelerate housing solutions for Kuwaiti citizens.

With more than 100,000 families currently on the national housing waitlist, the Kuwaiti government is turning to public-private partnerships to fast-track development. Al Futtaim’s entry represents one of the most high-profile endorsements of this new investment environment.

Long-Term Commitment to Kuwait

Al Futtaim’s new venture was established through the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA) and is licensed to operate across a wide range of activities, including residential and commercial construction, project management, and urban development.

The company will be headquartered in Kuwait and operate under a 99-year renewable license, according to founding documents.

Known for creating integrated city concepts, Al Futtaim brings decades of experience in delivering vibrant, mixed-use communities. The group has already developed five master-planned projects across 11.8 million square meters, comprising 29,000+ residential units that accommodate over 114,000 residents.

Its portfolio includes iconic destinations such as Dubai Festival City, Ski Dubai, Magic Planet, and VOX Cinemas, showcasing its expertise in blending retail, leisure, and housing.

Kuwait’s Real Estate Sector in Transformation

Kuwait is currently reimagining its housing model, moving from traditional public housing systems to a new framework that empowers private developers. The Ministry of Housing has designated three mega residential projects — Sabriya, Nawaf Al Ahmad, and Khairan — expected to deliver around 170,000 housing units.

Under the new policy, private developers will construct homes exclusively for eligible Kuwaiti citizens, with pricing aligned to mortgage-based financing models to ensure long-term affordability.

The upcoming developments will feature flexible housing types, from compact villas to large plots over 1,000 sq. meters, with investment horizons extending beyond 30 years.

Kuwait’s Investment Landscape Expands

Foreign direct investment into Kuwait is steadily gaining traction. According to KDIPA, foreign investment inflows totaled KD 206.9 million last fiscal year, raising the cumulative total to KD 1.74 billion.

In the past year alone, 16 new foreign companies from 12 countries established operations in Kuwait. Currently, 95 global firms are active in sectors such as IT, insurance, healthcare, and, for the first time, agriculture.

European companies make up nearly 60% of all foreign investment, followed by firms from Asia (28.5%), North America (9.5%), and Africa (1.9%).

Dubai : Indian expatriates in the UAE are enjoying a renewed window of opportunity as the Indian rupee continues its downward slide against the UAE dirham. The currency has dropped to the 23.36–23.40 range, continuing its depreciation from last Friday.

This decline led to a spike in remittances from the UAE and Saudi Arabia over the weekend, as non-resident Indians (NRIs) seized the chance to send money home at favorable rates.

What’s Behind the Rupee’s Fall?

The main factor impacting currency markets right now is the uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump’s ongoing global tariff strategies, including trade negotiations with India.

“Indian markets are watching the ‘deal or no-deal’ scenario closely,” said Neelesh Gopalan, Treasury Manager at a Dubai-based financial firm. “In the latter half of July, the dirham-rupee rate is forecast to stay above 23.4 and could even touch 23.5.”

Though this may concern some, it’s still more favorable for NRIs compared to earlier this year, when the rupee hovered around 23.0–23.2, with only occasional dips to 23.3. In mid-June, the rupee briefly fell to 23.62 during the Israel-Iran geopolitical tensions.

“The rupee may test 23.5 temporarily, but that’s likely to be short-lived,” said Subramanian Sharma, CEO of Greenback Advisory Services. “If recovery occurs, we could see a return to 23.3.”

What’s Next for NRIs?

Currency experts predict the rupee will trade in a range of 23.25 to 23.45 in the near term. However, any dip to 23.50 presents a potentially lucrative opportunity for Indian expats to remit funds home.

Dubai ∙ In a historic move, Kuwait has appointed women to its higher public prosecution office for the first time, marking a major step toward gender equality in the country’s traditionally male-dominated legal system.

The landmark appointments were part of a broader reshuffle initiated by Attorney General Saad Al Safran, which involved transferring several prosecutors from local and specialized positions to senior ranks within the prosecution office.

In a statement, the Public Prosecution described the inclusion of women as “a precedent recorded for the first time,” emphasizing that the promotions were based purely on merit and professional competence.

“This decision reflects the well-deserved confidence in Kuwaiti women and their vital role in the criminal justice system,” the statement said, highlighting the nation’s growing commitment to equal opportunity and female leadership in public service.

The move aligns with directives from the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who has called for increased representation of qualified Kuwaiti nationals, especially in vital sectors such as the judiciary.

In a parallel development, Badr Al Masaad, currently First Chief Prosecutor and Head of the Attorney General’s Technical Office, has been appointed to lead the higher prosecution body.

Dubai ∙ The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior has announced a new policy granting a one-year grace period to individuals whose citizenship has been revoked, giving them time to regularize their legal status. The decision, which takes effect from July 20, 2025, provides a structured set of rights and responsibilities designed to uphold legal clarity and social stability.

The move primarily applies to those whose Kuwaiti citizenship was rescinded under the “Grand Acts of Worship” clause—a category typically awarded for exceptional moral or religious service. The Ministry emphasized that the policy reflects Kuwait’s commitment to justice, transparency, and orderly governance.

Key Provisions of the Policy

Continued Use of Passport: Affected individuals may continue using their Kuwaiti passports for four months from the date of citizenship withdrawal. This provision applies retroactively to all prior cases and prospectively to future ones, giving individuals time to secure documentation from their country of origin.

Residency and Travel Documents: The Ministry urges affected individuals to immediately coordinate with their embassies to obtain foreign passports or legal residency papers. Those who fail to initiate this process within three months risk losing remaining benefits—unless they can show active attempts to resolve their status.

Employment Rights: Individuals may continue working in existing government or affiliated jobs, but are no longer eligible for senior or supervisory roles.

Education: Current diploma, university, and postgraduate students are permitted to continue their education and retain any previously awarded scholarships.

Housing:

Individuals may retain one private residence in Kuwait.

Those with multiple spouses may keep more than one home.

Beneficiaries of land and full housing loans must repay their Credit Bank loan within one year.

Those who received land but haven’t built homes must complete construction and occupancy within two years, at their own expense.

Property and Assets:

Individuals may still own private vehicles and sponsor domestic workers, subject to existing regulations.

They lose the right to own state assets such as chalets, farms, or commercial/industrial plots, which must be transferred within five years to a first-degree Kuwaiti relative without incurring transfer fees.

Privately-owned commercial or investment properties must also be transferred through sale, gift, or legal assignment within five years.

Termination of Benefits

All rights and entitlements under this policy will be immediately revoked if the individual:

Is convicted of a felony, or crimes involving honor, trust, national security, or religious offenses.

Fails to secure legal residency or reclaim original nationality within one year of the decree’s publication.

Grievance Process

Individuals have the right to file appeals with the Citizenship Withdrawal Grievance Committee, formed under Cabinet Resolution No. 207 of 2025, and amended by Resolution No. 493 of the same year.

The Ministry described the move as a balanced approach that ensures affected individuals have time and guidance to resolve their legal status, while also protecting national interests and legal consistency.

Abu Dhabi ∙ In a move to ensure the safe, responsible, and sustainable use of its vast waterways, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has introduced the “Regulatory Bylaw for Maritime Safety” in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The newly announced regulations set clear standards for licensing, operations, environmental protection, and maritime oversight, marking a significant step toward improving safety and sustainability across the emirate’s waters.

With nearly 45,000 square kilometres of water bodies, a 2,400-kilometre coastline, and 230 islands, Abu Dhabi’s maritime environment is a critical part of its economy, heritage, and lifestyle. The new bylaw is designed to regulate the use of these waters for both commercial and recreational purposes by introducing uniform operational guidelines and safety protocols.

Key Provisions of the Maritime Bylaw

The regulatory framework outlines the roles and responsibilities of all maritime stakeholders and addresses:

Licensing and permitting for vessels and operations

Environmental protection and anti-pollution measures

Safe operational conduct

Emergency preparedness and response

Particular focus is placed on preserving marine ecosystems and protecting the emirate’s natural heritage.

Implementation and Enforcement

Abu Dhabi Maritime, a DMT affiliate working in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), has been appointed as the primary implementation body for the new regulations. Its responsibilities will include:

Conducting inspections and audits

Removing wrecks and managing infrastructure

Installing and maintaining navigational aids

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating:

“These regulations reflect Abu Dhabi’s commitment to achieving the highest standards of safety across all transport sectors. With this integrated framework, we aim to enhance maritime efficiency, safeguard our environment, and support our long-term vision of a sustainable and resilient maritime sector.”

Penalties and Compliance

To support enforcement, the DMT has established a structured system of fees and fines. These include:

Service fees for licenses, permits, and inspections

Fines for violations such as unsafe practices, environmental infractions, and navigation breaches

The regulations will officially come into effect once published in the Official Gazette of Abu Dhabi.

Promoting Maritime Best Practices

Abu Dhabi Maritime also reaffirmed its commitment to health, safety, environmental protection, and operational excellence across all waterways. As part of its ongoing outreach, the body provides:

Access to legislation and safety codes

Tidal and weather information

Best practice guidelines for all users

These efforts are aligned with directives from Abu Dhabi’s leadership and aim to maintain the emirate’s position as a world-class maritime hub.

The new regulatory framework is expected to enhance coordination, promote environmental stewardship, and ensure that Abu Dhabi’s waterways continue to serve as a safe and vital asset for generations to come.

Saudi Arabia has officially passed a new law allowing foreign investors to acquire property in the Kingdom — a significant move aimed at attracting global capital into its booming real estate sector. However, specific rules and guidelines must be followed to take full advantage of the opportunity.

The Real Estate General Authority will soon identify the areas eligible for foreign investment, expected to include high-demand locations such as Riyadh and Jeddah.

“Detailed executive regulations will be made public within six months via the ‘Istitlaa’ platform for public feedback,” said Naveen Sharma, Chairman of the Taxation Society.

Investment Hotspots and Demand

Recent off-plan launches in the Kingdom, including high-end developments like the Trump Tower in Jeddah, have attracted strong interest from domestic investors. Two additional Trump-branded projects, including one potentially in Riyadh, are expected to follow.

According to real estate experts, two main categories of foreign investors are likely to be drawn to Saudi Arabia’s market:

GCC-based business owners seeking a permanent base in the Kingdom.

Global investors seeking long-term returns from a growing real estate market expected to perform strongly over the next 5–10 years.

What Foreign Investors Must Know

Residency Requirements: Previously, a valid residency permit (Iqama) was required for foreigners to buy residential property.
But under the 2025 reforms, non-resident foreigners can now invest in major Vision 2030 projects such as NEOM and the Red Sea Project—provided they meet the minimum investment thresholds.

Property Limits: Foreign individuals can own only one residential property at a time. They must sell the existing property before buying another.

Land Restrictions: Foreigners are not permitted to buy undeveloped land for speculation. However, they can acquire land in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) like NEOM for large-scale development projects worth SAR 30 million or more.

Development Timeframe: Large-scale foreign property projects must be developed within five years of purchase.

No Residency Guarantee: Buying property does not grant residency rights. Foreigners seeking premium residency (Saudi Arabia’s version of a “green card”) must invest at least SAR 800,000 as a one-time fee or qualify through special status.

Tax and Fees Overview

Real Estate Transaction Tax (RETT): 5%

White Land Tax: 2.5%

VAT on commercial leases: 15%

Property transfers must be officially registered with authorities — typically through the Notary Public or electronic title registry. Administrative fees are modest, with title deed registration often costing around 1% of the property’s value, usually paid by the buyer.

Special Economic Zones Offer Flexibility

“Saudi Arabia’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) offer a more flexible regulatory framework for international investors,” Sharma added. These zones are designed to facilitate foreign participation through streamlined processes, reduced red tape, and potentially more relaxed ownership conditions — all depending on project-specific policies.

With this legislative reform, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a major global investment destination in the real estate sector, aligning with its broader Vision 2030 goals of economic diversification and international collaboration.

Dubai: With just days left before her scheduled execution on July 16, Indian nurse Nimisha Priya has made a heartfelt plea to the Indian government to intervene and save her life. Convicted of murder in Yemen in 2018, Nimisha’s last hope lies in receiving a pardon from the victim’s family in exchange for diya (blood money), a practice permitted under Sharia law.

According to NDTV, the emotional appeal was relayed through Babu John, an activist with the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council. He said Nimisha has specifically asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in swiftly.

“She is hopeful that she will be saved if the Indian government acts quickly,” John told NDTV.

$1 Million Blood Money Offer on the Table

Efforts are underway to offer the victim’s family $1 million (approximately ₹8.6 crore) as blood money. Samuel Jerome, the family’s legal representative, is currently in Sana’a negotiating the deal. However, the victim’s family has yet to accept or reject the offer.

“We have proposed $1 million, and the family has not given a final response. If they agree, we are ready to mobilize the amount immediately,” John said.

Nimisha’s Background and the Incident

Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, moved to Yemen in 2008 for work. She initially served in hospitals before opening her own clinic. Yemeni business law required her to have a local partner, and she entered into a partnership with a man named Talal Abdo Mehdi.

Reports suggest that Nimisha was subjected to repeated harassment and abuse by Mehdi, who also allegedly confiscated her passport. In 2017, in what activists describe as a desperate attempt to retrieve her documents and escape, she injected him with sedatives. He died, and she was arrested while trying to flee the country.

Husband, Activists Remain Hopeful

Nimisha’s husband, Tomy Thomas, said he is in regular contact with her via text and voice messages.

“The central and state governments, as well as the Ministry of External Affairs, are involved,” he told ANI. “We are hopeful of a positive outcome.”

He added that even the Governor of Kerala has extended support and facilitated communication with Nimisha’s mother through video conferencing.

Limited Legal Options Remain

All formal legal avenues have been exhausted. The Yemeni Supreme Judicial Council upheld the conviction in November 2023, and the country’s president signed the execution order. Yemen’s laws allow for two outcomes in murder cases:

Qisas (retributive justice, i.e., execution)

Pardon in exchange for diya (blood money)

“We are appealing to the family to show mercy, whether or not they accept the money,” said John.

No Diplomatic Ties, But Growing Support

The lack of diplomatic relations between India and the Houthi-led administration in Yemen has complicated intervention efforts.

“The civil war and the absence of formal diplomatic channels make it difficult. But India is a regional power, and Prime Minister Modi has strong international standing. His intervention can make a difference,” said John.

Nimisha’s Role in Prison and Ongoing Campaign

Since her arrest, Nimisha has been serving fellow inmates as a medical professional in prison. According to activists, she is in regular contact with her family and remains mentally strong and hopeful.

“She serves as a doctor in jail and even has daily communication with us through the support of jail authorities,” John noted. “Even the Yemeni prison staff want her to be saved.”

The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, formed in 2020, continues to rally support both in India and abroad.

“This is not just about one individual. This case will be a test of how India protects its citizens abroad — especially women and migrant workers,” John said.

Dubai: Indians travelling to the UAE can now enjoy the convenience of making payments directly from their Indian bank accounts using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). However, experts believe there’s a need to simplify the UPI registration process for NRIs to ensure wider adoption.

Despite the growing popularity of UPI among Indian visitors and residents, the current onboarding process for NRIs is too complex, say senior financial industry sources in the UAE.

“What we need is a simplified registration process that allows onboarding using alternative KYC measures such as Emirates ID and passport,” said Dr. Sahitya Chaturvedi, Secretary-General of the Indian Business & Professional Council (IBPC).

He also suggested that the system should allow UAE-issued debit/credit cards or bank accounts to be linked for transactions in India, enabling a seamless cross-border digital payment experience.

NRIs Can Now Use UAE Mobile Numbers for UPI Transfers

Recently, UAE-based remittance platforms began notifying Indian customers that they can now send money from their UPI-linked NRE/NRO accounts using their UAE mobile number. Earlier, this service was restricted to Indian mobile numbers registered with their accounts.

“For mid-income and blue-collar NRIs, reducing compliance hurdles and clarifying tax implications can greatly accelerate fintech adoption under the India-UAE CEPA framework,” added Dr. Chaturvedi, who is also the Head of Internal Audit at Ajmal Perfumes.

UPI for Indian Tourists: A Game-Changer?

UPI’s functionality is expected to be a major boost for Indian tourists in the UAE. The upcoming integration with the UAE’s digital payments infrastructure will allow Indian travelers to make payments with just their smartphones — no need for credit cards or cash.

However, UPI-based payments can currently only be used at UAE retail outlets that are UPI-enabled, noted Nilay Singh, BFSI Convener at IBPC Dubai and CEO of SBI.

Despite this, credit cards remain the preferred choice for most Indian visitors.

“Familiarity, wider acceptance, and perks like reward points make credit cards more attractive,” said Krishnan Ramachandran, CEO of Barjeel Geojit Financial Services.

He added, “Credit cards offer deferred payment options and global usability without immediate bank deductions – features that appeal to many travelers.”

What Needs to Change?

To drive wider adoption, UPI platforms must match the benefits credit cards offer, especially for frequent travelers. While UPI is a cost-effective solution, limited awareness and patchy global acceptance remain challenges.

“UPI is indeed cheaper for cost-conscious travelers – but only where accepted,” Ramachandran pointed out.

Other Payment Options for Indian Tourists in the UAE

According to Nilay Singh, the Local Currency Settlement (LCS) agreement between India and the UAE has opened up new avenues for rupee-based payments. Under the new RBI amendments, UAE businesses can open Special Non-Repatriable Rupee (SNRR) accounts. However, this is mostly used in gold purchases and hasn’t yet seen broader consumer adoption.

Here are some of the popular payment options for Indian travelers in the UAE:

International Debit Cards: Indian banks offer Visa/Mastercard debit cards for international use.

‘Vishwa Yatra’ Prepaid Cards: Pre-loaded with multiple currencies, usable for withdrawals and purchases.

Credit Cards: Still the most common method of payment for Indian tourists.

RuPay Global Cards: Can be used for international payments at select partner merchants.

Digital Wallets & Payment Links: Often used by merchants for seamless transactions.

As India and the UAE deepen fintech cooperation, simplifying UPI access for NRIs and tourists could become a turning point in cross-border digital finance.
