Passengers arriving at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and holding residence visas issued in emirates other than Dubai must have a pre-travel approval from the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA).

According to Khaleej Times, a Dubai Airports spokesperson said that this is part of the the new travel requirements. Dubai residence visa holders need an approval from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) to return to the UAE.

Several passengers were stranded in the arrivals terminal of DXB on October 7 owing to the new requirement, according to the Consulate of India in Dubai. Around 300 passengers were safely transported to their homes in coordination with Dubai Police and Dubai Road Transport Authority, the GDRFA Dubai said on October 8.

Neeraj Agarwal, Consul for press, information, and culture at the CGI Dubai, said a majority of them were Indians.

The Consulate has updated the revised travel regulations on its Twitter page, and has requested all passengers to take note of the changes to avoid inconvenience at the airports.

Emirates Airlines has introduced self check-in and bag drop kiosks for a more seamless airport experience at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport.

According to Emirates, the service is now available to customers travelling to all destinations except to the US, Canada, China, India and Hong Kong since these destinations have some additional requirements.

There are 16 new self-service bag drop machines and 8 self-service kiosks that will complement the desks manned by Emirates check-in agents to reduce waiting time for customers during peak periods and improve the customer experience in Dubai. More self-services facilities are being planned in the coming months.

The kiosks allow customers to check-in, receive the boarding pass, choose seats in flight, and drop off their bags. Emirates staff will be on hand if any assistance is required; however, the facilities are fully self- service, making it easy for customers to breeze through airport procedures and proceed directly to immigration. They are cleaned and disinfected regularly; hand sanitisers are available for customer use.

The new offering was developed in house at Emirates in collaboration with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects and Dubai Airports.

The self check-in kiosks will be continually upgraded to offer new features in the future. This could include going touchless, and allowing customers to make re-bookings on their own.
