HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, inspected some of the transport projects of Dubai on October 31. He made a tour of the Shindagha Corridor Project, a large project of the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai, and checked on its construction progress.

Once complete, the Shindagha Corridor Project is expected to reduce the journey time from one end to the other from 104 minutes to 16 minutes. The project which extends 13 kilometres from Sheikh Rashid Street through Al Mina Street and Al Khaleej Street up to Cairo Street, costs Dh5 billion.

It is expected to be complete by 2021, and will serve major development projects in the surrounding areas, including Deira Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Port Rashid and Dubai Maritime City.

The project was launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, in 2018. The bridge is part of the third phase of the Dh5 billion Shindagha Corridor project extending 13 km along Sheikh Rashid Street. It consists of six lanes in each direction in addition to a pedestrian crossing.

The bridge extends about 295 metres, and 150 metres of it is over the Dubai Creek. Rising over 15 metres above the water level, it allows a whole range of boats on the Creek to pass under it.

The bridge will sport an iconic design – an arch shaped in the form of the mathematical symbol for infinity. The top of the infinity arch rises 42 metres. About 2,400 tonnes of steel will be used in the construction of the bridge.

Originally designed to replace the 45-year-old Shindagha Tunnel, the only crossing in the area, the new bridge is now set to run parallel to the tunnel, both serving traffic simultaneously.

The Shindagha Tunnel is the only underwater road crossing the Dubai Creek and connects the neighborhoods of Al Ras and Deira. The four-lane tunnel is currently one of the busiest crossings on the creek, with more than 100,000 vehicles passing through it on an average daily.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, chaired a meeting of the Executive Council at The Expo Metro Station, to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Dubai Metro on September 9, and the launch of Dubai Metro Route 2020.

State news agency WAM reported that Sheikh Hamdan said the Dubai Metro was a quality addition to Dubai’s infrastructure, promoted its urban aspect and presented a model of meeting requirements of urban growth of the city. The metro project translated the vision of Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to cement Dubai as an international city and a hub for modern lifestyle, he said. Sheikh Hamdan also said that the metro was an artery for development, and highlighted the quality of life in cities.

“Eleven years ago, we launched Dubai Metro, which has been a witness to the distinctive development journey of the city,” Sheikh Hamdan said. He noted that the metro was a central piece of Dubai’s urban boom, and made Dubai a city on the move. “Dubai Metro also highlights Dubai’s strategy in facing challenges through proactive practical solutions,” he said.

“The inauguration of Route 2020 will lead Dubai towards a new phase of its journey, and reflects the leap it made in the transportation sector to keep pace with its future aspirations, as it is a model of sustainability and innovation for current and future generations. Our vision is clear and challenges won’t stop us from reaching our objectives,” the Dubai royal said.

During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan was briefed about a number of projects and programmes, including the joint project between Dubai Municipality and Dubai Land.

The meeting also discussed the new academic year and the school reopening plan amid the pandemic, and the protocols in place to ensure safety and well-being of students and schools staff. The COVID-19 Command and Control Centre updated the meeting about the progress made in the fight against COVID-19, and public compliance with safety protocols.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has announced that Dubai is set to become a bicycle-friendly city after new road safety laws and infrastructure to support riders are put in place. Speaking at a Dubai Police event on August 13, he urged authorities to adopt global best practices to develop the emirate with a bicycle-friendly infrastructure.

The announcement is part of the objectives of Dubai Vision 2021, which aims to strengthen the city as the world’s most preferred place to live, work and visit.

It also supports the objectives of the Dubai Traffic Strategy 2021 that seeks to reduce road fatalities and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050s, which aims to achieve a 16 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2021.

The participants at the event suggested forming a task force that can work on developing the infrastructure, promoting a bicycle culture and introducing rules and laws that will ensure the safety of cyclists.

On August 9, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, was seen cycling around the city with his entourage using dedicated cycle path and wearing helmets.
