Of the new cases recorded, 6004 contracted the disease through contact. The source of infection of 664 remains unknown.

Twenty one deaths were reported in the state taking the total death toll to 656.

As many as 68 infected persons came from abroad while 177 came from other states. The total number positive cases in Thiruvananthapuram crossed 1000-mark. Ninety-three health workers were also confirmed of COVID-19.

The district-wise break up of positive cases are: 1050 from Thiruvananthapuram, 826 from Malappuram, 729 from Ernakulam, 684 from Kozhikode, 594 from Thrissur, 589 from Kollam, 547 from Palakkad, 435 from Kannur, 414 from Alappuzha, 389 from Kottayam, 329 from Pathanamthitta, 224 from Kasaragod, 107 from Idukki, 89 from Wayanad.

The deceased are George (69), Sadasivan (90) & Vavakunju (68) from Kollam district; Karunakaran (85), A N Mukundan (57), Jasmine Zakir (39) and Cleetus (82) from Alappuzha district; Jacob George (82), Akash (18), Manoj Stephen Thomas (57) & C J Joseph (65) from Kottayam district; Muhammad Suneer (45), P P Davis (65) & Chandrasekharan (90) from Thrissur district, Akbar Pasha (40) from Kozhikode district, Sainuddin (58) from Malappuram district; Rajesh (45), Kalamani (58), Vijayan (59), Thomas Cornelles (60) & Padmavathi (67) from Thiruvananthapuram district, and Delbin (50) from Pathanamthitta district.
 

The district-wise numbers for the positive cases were Thiruvananthapuram 814, Malappuram 784, Kozhikode 690, Ernakulam 655, Thrissur 607, Kollam 569, Alappuzha 551, Kannur & Palakkad 419 each, Kottayam 322, Kasaragod 268, Pathanamthitta 191, Idukki 114 and Wayanad 74.
 

The figures for those infected through contact from the districts were Thiruvananthapuram 794, Malappuram 753, Kozhikode 676, Ernakulam 619, Thrissur 596, Kollam 552, Alappuzha 516, Palakkad 396, Kannur 353, Kottayam 320, Kasargod 251, Pathanamthitta 143, Idukki 97 and Wayanad 65.
 

The numbers of infected healthcare workers from the districts are Kannur 19, Thiruvananthapuram 14, Ernakulam 9, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur & Kasaragod 6, Palakkad 5, and Alappuzha, Malappuram & Kozhikode 3 each. 10 INHS personnel in Ernakulam district were also infected by the disease.
 

The district-wise count of the patients who tested negative were Thiruvananthapuram 411, Kollam 207, Pathanamthitta 120, Alappuzha 218, Kottayam 193, Idukki 69, Ernakulam 325, Thrissur 252, Palakkad 223, Malappuram 588, Kozhikode 472, Wayanad 79, Kannur 217 and Kasaragod 107.

 
So far, 1,11,331 people have cured of COVID in the State and at present, there are 48,892 patients undergoing treatment.
 

There are a total of 2,15,691 people under observation across the state, 1,88,265 under home or institutional quarantine and 27,426 in hospitals. 3,410 persons were hospitalised on the day.

 
At the same time, the number of tests being conducted in 24 hours has increased to 56,057.  Till now, a total of 26,57,430 samples have been sent for testing, including 2,00,420 samples from priority groups as part of the Sentinel Surveillance.

Twelve new areas were demarcated as hotspots today while 14 places were excluded from the list. There are 652 hotspots in Kerala now.

With 6,324 fresh cases, the total case count reached 1,54,456. The State also registered 3,168 recoveries taking the total recovery to 1,07,850 .

Kozhikode reported the highest number of coronavirus cases on September 24.

In the last 24 hours, 54,989 samples have been tested, a health department statement said.In total 26,00,359 samples were sent for testing. As many as 1,99,390 samples also collected as part of sentinel surveillance.

Of the 2,12,318 people under observation for suspected infection, 1,85,198 are home/institutional quarantined and 27,120 hospitalised.

Twenty two new places were designated as hotspots, while eight regions were excluded from the list. The state currently has 654 hotspots.

Of the 2,12,629 people under observation,1,86,140 are home/institutional quarantined and 26,489 hospitalised. Seventeen new places were designated as hotspots. Currently, the state has 641 hotspots.

The Chief Minister said that many youngsters are testing positive in the state. The COVID-19 death rate among Kerala youth is just 0.1 percent. However, overconfidence may cause adverse results, CM said.

33 of those diagnosed today have come back from foreign countries and 122, from other states.

Briefing the media, the Chief Minister said, “The outbreak of the pandemic is in a serious situation in the State and Thiruvananthapuram district has the highest number of cases. The capital city accounts for 18% of the active cases in the State and 32% of total deaths. Protests and crowding continue without any control and this is contributing to the spread of the virus. Political parties should behave responsibly and follow Covid protocol while protesting.”

The count for the contact cases from the districts are Thiruvananthapuram 656, Malappuram 431, Ernakulam 379, Alappuzha 365, Kozhikode 383, Thrissur 352, Kollam 341, Palakkad 240, Kasaragod 176, Kottayam 163, Pathanamthitta 159, Kannur 117, Wayanad 75 and Idukki 38.

There are a total of 2,20,270 persons under observation in various districts of the state, 1,94,488 under home or institutional quarantine and 25,782 in hospitals. 2,430 people were admitted to the hospitals on September 22.

38,574 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. Till now, a total of 24,92,757 samples have been sent for testing, including 1,97,282 samples from priority groups as part of Sentinel Surveillance.

At present, there are 639 hotspots in Kerala, nine were declared on September 22.
