After a spike in covid-19 cases for two months, India has reported less than 50,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. India on Tuesday added 46,791 fresh coronavirus cases taking the total tally to 75,97,064. In the past 24 hours, 587 coronavirus positive patients have succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll in the country to 1,15,197.

India has also seen a dip in the active cases, with a total of 23,517 since Monday (October 19). There are a total of 7,48,538 active cases in India and 67,33,329 people have recovered from the disease.

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to 40.3 million, while the deaths have soared to 1,117,430, according to the Johns Hopkins University. As of Tuesday morning, the total number of cases stood at 40,333,146, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.The US is the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 8,210,849 and 220,095, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India’s coronavirus case tally crossed the 30 lakh-mark and settled at 30,44,940 on Saturday, 16 days after crossing the 20 lakh-mark and eight days after breaching the 25 lakh-mark.

With this, the covid-19 recovery rate stands at 75% and the case fatality rate declines to 1.85%.

Maharashtra has 1,71,859 active cases, the highest in the country followed by Andhra Pradesh with 89,742 active cases.

As many as 6,09,917 samples were tested on August 23 while a total of 3,59,02,137 samples have been tested so far.

The Union Health Ministry said the gap between recoveries and COVID-19 active cases continues to widen as the recoveries are more than three times the active cases.

Phase-2 clinical trials of the vaccine being developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca would begin this week. The trials are being conducted by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, which has an agreement with AstraZeneca to manufacture and market this vaccine for low and middle-income countries, including India.

Globally, infections have crossed the 23 million-mark with over 8 lakh deaths.US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said a treatment based on blood plasma donated by people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 will be expanded, even before researchers fully understand how well it works. “This is a powerful therapy,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “Today’s action will dramatically expand access to this treatment.” The US Food and Drug Administration confirmed Sunday that it had cleared what’s known as convalescent plasma for use in certain patients

The landmark 75th session of the UN General Assembly is expected to begin on 15 September and the first day of the high-level general debate is likely to be held on 22 September. This year’s summit is on bio-diversity.

The general debate is held at the beginning of each session of the General Assembly and usually runs for over a week when leaders and ministers from the 193 UN members address the world from the iconic lectern in the General Assembly hall.

The 193-member organisation decided that the world leaders will submit pre-recorded statements for the session. The decision to depart from the usual practice of having world leaders attend the UN General Assembly session in person was announced on June this year by UNGA president Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.

“World leaders cannot come to New York because they cannot come as single individuals. A president doesn’t travel alone. We don’t expect therefore to have presidents here,” Muhammad-Bande told a news conference on June 9.

He said due to the covid-19 pandemic, in-person meetings at the UN headquarters were highly unlikely in the coming months.

Most of the UN’s meetings currently are being held online.
