Ajman: The General Command of Ajman Police has called on drivers to avoid random parking in front of mosques during night prayers (Qiyam). He emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic laws and avoiding obstruction of public roads and residential areas.

Anyone caught begging in the UAE will be fined AED5,000 and imprisoned for up to three months, the Public Prosecution has announced.

The UAE sees an increase in the number of beggars on the streets during the holy month of Ramadan, when charity and alms giving is foremost in the minds of the faithful. The law authorities are trying to crack down on beggars as begging is a crime in the UAE.

The Public Prosecution published an awareness video on social media highlighting the crimes of begging and organised begging, and punishments that will be given according to the law.

Punishments will be tougher if a beggar is healthy and has a source of income, has faked an injury or permanent impairment or used any other means to deceive people with the aim of obtaining benefits.

Moreover, those operating professional gangs of beggars or recruiting people from outside the country to work as beggars can face imprisonment of over six months and a minimum fine of AED100,000.

Anyone recruiting people from outside the country for organised begging can be punished with the same penalty, and anyone participating in organised begging can be imprisoned for up to three months and will be fined AED5,000.

The Public Prosecution hopes that its Twitter campaign will help to improve the legal culture and raise public awareness, including the importance of not begging during the Holy Month.

Organised gangs have been found to bring in beggars from countries in Asia, including other Arab nations.

Some beggars pretend to be street vendors plying wares, claiming they had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some beg online, to evade police crackdown.

Residents in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman have raised concerns about being accosted by beggars in residential and commercial areas, as well as at mosques.

Several beggars arrested by the Sharjah Police said they were brought into the UAE last November and instructed to ask for alms for six months. They were promised that they would return to their respective countries after gaining a lot of wealth. The gangs provided visas, air tickets and accommodation in lieu of 80 per cent of their daily earnings, the police said.

On the first day of Ramadan this year, the Dubai Police arrested 12 beggars. Over the last three years, the Dubai Police have arrested 842 beggars, who are mostly of Arab origin.

Instead of giving alms, the public have been encouraged to donate to registered charities and non-profit organisations. Residents can also help the police eradicate the illegal practice by reporting beggars.

An Indian maid who reportedly jumped from a building in Ajman while trying to flee from a recruitment agent, has managed to fly home, thanks to the kindness of a UAE hospital and the Indian consulate. The woman who had multiple injuries and was unconscious for about two months in Dubai’s Rashid Hospital finally flew home on September 16, Gulf News reports. The hospital waived her bills for three months and the Indian Consulate in Dubai assisted her with her repatriation.

The case of Indian maid Asma was brought to their notice by the hospital staff during a routine visit by consulate officials to the hospital to support unattended Indian patients.

According to Jitender Singh Negi, Consul (Labour and Consular Service), the hospital had no details about the woman until she woke up from coma more than two months after she was admitted. The woman said she was mistreated by the agent who had brought her to the UAE. While trying to flee, she jumped from the second floor of a building in Ajman on June 21. It was not known who took her to the emergency department of the hospital; she had no visitors either during her hospitalisation.

After she regained consciousness, Asma gave her details in Mumbai and the hospital got in touch with her family. Following this, the consulate was able to retrieve a copy of the woman’s passport, using which they made an emergency certificate — a one-way travel document for Indians without a valid passport and also gave her a free air ticket. All the required documentation was done in the hospital itself as she was unable to visit any BLS Centre, and her signatures on the papers needed for EC were collected from the hospital itself, said Negi.

The hospital authorities magnanimously waived the entire bill for her treatment for three months and also liaised with immigration authorities to facilitate her repatriation.
Neeraj Agrawal, consul for Press, Information and Culture at the Consulate, thanked Rashid Hospital for the kind gesture.

Though Asma needed a wheel chair to move around at the airport, there was no requirement for an escort her, he said. He added that her relatives received her in Mumbai.

Sheltering and repatriating runaway maids and other Indian women in distress is one of the important community welfare activities of the Indian Consulate in Dubai. Although Indian mission and Ministry officials advise job-seekers to use the e-Migrate system, many continue to be duped by fraudulent agents.

Kuwait has expressed its readiness to help Lebanon in re-operating the Beirut port that was devastated by an explosion on August 4.

Sheikh Yousef Abdullah Sabah Al Nasser Al Sabah, who is the Director General of Kuwait’s Ports Authority and also President of the Arab Sea Ports Federation, said on that the Ports Authority is ready to provide all necessary assistance for the re-operation of the country’s ports. It also offered help with food security.

During a meeting with Lebanese Charge d’Affairs to Kuwait Basil Oweidat, Sheikh Al Sabah discussed the reconstruction and re-operation of the port as well as the development of the Lebanese ports in Tripoli, Sidon and Tyre. He said his country will provide all economic and strategic studies in the field of port development to Lebanon.

The United Arab Emirates has continued to dispatch aid to Lebanon to help with emergency relief efforts on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

On August 12, Dubai’s International Humanitarian City airlifted aid material worth US$1.4 million on an Emirates SkyCargo plane. The aid included almost 25 metric tonnes of medical supplies and personal protective equipment, including surgical masks, goggles, gowns, coveralls, N95 respirators, stretchers and thermometers, which had been prepositioned within International Humanitarian City by the World Health Organisation.

On August 13, the fourth UAE aid plane arrived in Lebanon equipped with around 100 tons of medicines, food, and nutritional supplements for children, in addition to other aid supplies.

The move follows the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and Honorary President of the Emirates Red Crescent, overseen by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, and Chairman of ERC. Sheikha Fatima had already donated AED10 million in the aftermath of the explosion as part of the ERC’s relief programmes in Lebanon.

The plane also carried an ERC delegation which will be fulfilling various humanitarian duties like delivering aid, assessing the situation on the ground, and identifying further needs.

H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, called on Arab countries to support the Lebanese people pointing out that Lebanon was and is still part of the Arab nation.

Less than 24 hours after The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a Sharjah-based global humanitarian charity, announced a global campaign to provide emergency relief for the blast victims, a 90-minute live fundraising event hosted on Sharjah TV’s popular Direct Line (Al Khat Al Mubasher) programme on August 12 successfully raised AED 30.74 million with dozens of charitable individuals and organisations calling in to make generous contributions. They donated amounts ranging from AED 5,000 to AED 6 million during the programme.

An estimated 70 tonnes of basic food aid was airlifted on August 11 by Ajman’s International Humanitarian and Charity Organisation upon the directives of H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman.

Saudi Arabia has sent as many as four plane of aid so far, operated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). The fourth despatch included 90 tons of medicines, burn treatment supplies, intravenous fluids, masks, sanitizers, and surgical sutures, Saudi Press Agency said.

King Abdullah II of Jordan on August 12 instructed that a military field hospital be sent to Lebanon as a rescue unit. He also highlighted Jordan’s readiness to provide any support needed.

As per the royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Sultanate of Oman continues to operate relief flights to Lebanon to help the authorities deal with the aftermath of the explosion. The relief flights, operated by the Royal Air Force of Oman, carries various medical supplies and essential humanitarian items onboard.

A huge blaze broke out at an Iranian souq in the emirate of Ajman at about 6.30 pm on August 5. It was brought under complete control in a few hours by Civil Defence personnel. Police confirmed there were no casualties.

The souq had been closed for several months because of COVID-19 safety measures.

It is near the Ajman Speciality Hospital and a fruit and vegetable market in the city’s industrial area. The hospital was evacuated as a precautionary measure as the fire sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

Workers at the market saw the flames engulfing the area and alerted the emergency service.

Ajman Civil Defence, which brought the blaze under control at about 9 pm, were assisted by personnel from the emirates of Dubai, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain.

Major Gen Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of Ajman Police, said investigations are under way to determine the cause of the fire.

“Civil Defence units and 25 police and ambulance vehicles responded immediately, reaching the incident site within three minutes and were able to isolate neighbouring buildings and bring the fire under control,” said Al Nuaimi said. He said 25 police vehicles were rushed to the spot to support civil defence staff.
