Super Overs turn lucky for KKR and KXIP

Our Correspondent

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Super Over after the match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi ended in a tie on October 18.

Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson, who was making his IPL debut, proved to be a valuable asset for KKR when he claimed five wickets – three during the Sunrisers’ chase and two more in the Super Over. He claimed the wickets of SRH skipper David Warner and Abdul Samad in the first three deliveries, hence SRH over was completed as per the Super Over rules at two for two. For KKR, captain Eoin Morgan and ex-captain Dinesh Karthik made the required runs (3/0).

Earlier, Morgan made 34 off 23 balls and Dinesh Karthik 29 off 14 taking KKR to 163 for five wickets.

Chasing the KKR target, Punjab finished the chase at 163 for six. Warner’s 47 off 33 balls and Johny Bairstow’s 36 off 28 balls helped his team reach the tie even as other wickets fell around him.

Lockie Ferguson was declared Man of the match for his splendid bowling.

Mumbai’s winning streak faces a blow

In the second match of the day, Kings XI Punjab defeated the Mumbai Indians in a highly dramatic final in Dubai. It made it in the second Super Over as the first Super Over ended in 5 runs for both the teams. Earlier, both teams were tied at 176.

While it was a much-needed victory for Punjab, who were at the bottom of the table, Mumbai was tasting defeat after winning five games in a row.

Mumbai had cobbled a total of 176 powered by Quinton de Kock (53 off 43 balls) and later a 57-run stand between Kieron Pollard (34 off 12) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (24 off 12).

For Punjab, the chase was led by skipper KL Rahul (77 runs of 51 balls) who won the man of the match title. Chris Gayle (24), Nicholas Pooran (24) and Deepak Hooda (23) gave good support.
In the Super Over, Mumbai could make only 11 runs while Punjab made 15.
