Sultan Haitham’s eldest son is first Crown Prince of Oman

Our Correspondent

His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq’s eldest son Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said has become the Sultanate’s first Crown Prince following amendments to the Basic Law of the State approved by the Sultan.

Sayyid Theyazin, 31, is currently the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth. He has been occupying the post since his appointment in August 2020 to the first government formed by his father.
His Majesty the Sultan became the ruler of Oman after the death of his cousin and Oman’s longest serving ruler, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who had named his successor in a royal testament that was made public after his passing away in January 2020.

Sayyid Theyazin earlier served as second secretary at the Oman’s embassy in London. He is known for his interest in youth and sports. Born in 1990, Sayyid Theyazin has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Oxford University in Britain.
The move comes a day after His Majesty the Sultan issued decree No.6 of 2021 and decree No.7 of 2021, on power transfer and appointment of Crown Prince as well as the statute of the Council of Oman.
Decree No.6 of 2021 calls for setting up a mechanism to determine the Crown Prince’s powers as well as to highlight the principle of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary as a foundation for governance in the country.
