Sonia Gandhi recovering from Covid-linked fungal infection in respiratory tract

She is currently being treated for it along with other post-Covid symptoms. She continues to be under close observation and treatment

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi continues to be under treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after she developed a fungal infection in her lower respiratory tract following a Covid-19 infection, the party said.

“She was immediately put under treatment and underwent a related follow-up procedure yesterday (Thursday) morning,” a statement from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) said Friday. “She is currently being treated for it along with other post-Covid symptoms. She continues to be under close observation and treatment,” it added.

Sonia Gandhi was rushed to the hospital’s emergency wing last Sunday with profuse bleeding from the nose, when the infection was detected. The 75-year-old Congress leader had to undergo a procedure for the same. She had tested positive for Covid-19 ten days before the hospitalisation. At the time, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said she had developed a mild fever, and some other symptoms, and had isolated herself.

Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been visiting Sonia at the hospital. The Congress president was accompanied to the hospital by her daughter Priyanka. On June 12, minutes after a section of the emergency was cordoned off after she was admitted, her son Rahul Gandhi was also by her hospital bed.
