Soaring Airfares Disrupt Return Plans of Expat Families: Ticket Prices More Than Double

Abu Dhabi : With schools in Kerala set to reopen on June 2, expatriate families who traveled to the UAE during the vacation season are now facing steep airfare hikes as they plan their return. Airlines have significantly increased ticket prices—more than double compared to rates earlier this month.

With the Eid al-Adha holidays also falling in early June, ticket prices are expected to surge even further. Since the UAE’s official summer vacation doesn’t begin until June 26, those looking for affordable fares may have to wait until mid-September, making immediate return trips financially burdensome for many.

Ticket Prices Skyrocket

Families who traveled to the UAE on a two-month visit visa after schools closed in March have now started their return journeys. In the coming days, both air traffic and ticket prices are expected to rise even more.

Earlier this month, a one-way ticket to Kerala was available for around AED 400. Currently, the same ticket is priced at over AED 900, and the longer you delay booking, the more expensive it gets—causing anxiety among returning families. A family of four now needs a minimum of AED 4,000 just for tickets.

Hidden Charges and Misleading Offers

Some airline websites initially display lower fares, but once passengers proceed with booking, additional fees for luggage (especially for 30 kg) and non-stop flight options inflate the total cost.

While cheaper tickets may be available via connecting flights—often taking 10 to 20 hours—the difference is usually only around AED 100–200. For families traveling with small children, these long transit routes are not ideal, forcing many to pay higher prices for direct flights.

Additionally, some airlines are accused of misleading advertising, displaying low promotional fares that aren’t actually available during peak travel times. For instance, travelers drawn in by ads offering flights to Kochi for AED 650 are shocked to find actual prices much higher during booking.

Between mid-June and early July, one-way ticket prices may go up to AED 2,500. Inquiries to airlines about advertised deals are often met with responses like, “This offer does not apply during the peak season.”
