Sharjah urges building owners to comply with fire safety measures

Web Desk
In their continued efforts to maintain the safety of residents and prevent fire accidents, officials from the Sharjah Municipality have carried out many field inspections to ensure that all buildings adhere to the highest specifications and standards of construction, especially ones that have aluminium cladding facades. The inspections were carried out in commercial and industrial areas, and building owners were advised to replace flammable facades with safer materials even as they maintained the aesthetic look of Sharjah.
Thabit Salem Al Turaifi, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, said the emirate placed safety for residents as “a top priority”.
“Sharjah Municipality organised field visits to several buildings with aluminium cladding in order to ensure the highest specifications and standards in all buildings in the city. The municipality had previously rolled out a campaign to list all buildings with aluminum facades in the commercial and industrial areas. It offered incentives to owners of the buildings to encourage them to strengthen safety requirements in their buildings. The owners were urged to replace the aluminum panels and flammable facades with inflammable materials while maintaining the aesthetic image of Sharjah,” stated its Instagram post.
Colonel Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence, said that the cladding of 150 buildings in Sharjah would now be replaced.
On May 28, Sharjah Municipality had issued regulations for balcony use and warned residents against storing unused furniture or hanging laundry in a way that it spoiled the aesthetic appearance of the city. Storing furniture or leaving balcony doors open could result in fatal accidents involving children.
