Sharjah Police issue warning on rising online fraud

Sharjah : As cybercrime continues to escalate, the Sharjah Police have issued a crucial alert to residents, urging heightened vigilance against the growing threat of online fraud. In an official social media announcement, Sharjah Police warned about the increasing prevalence of fraudulent websites and scams targeting unsuspecting individuals in the emirate.
The police highlighted the tactics used by scammers who impersonate legitimate organisations in an effort to steal sensitive personal and financial information. Fraudsters often create deceptive websites designed to look legitimate, tricking users into providing their data.

The police warned the public of the severe risks involved in interacting with unverified online sources, which can lead to significant personal and financial losses.

Stay safe online
In a bid to raise awareness, Sharjah Police shared a visual on social media, prominently featuring a “Scam Alert” message with the image of a cybercriminal’s silhouette.

This striking image serves to emphasise the urgency and seriousness of the threat. Officials also reported that numerous residents have already fallen victim to these scams, underscoring the importance of staying informed and cautious when browsing online.

Key safety tips

To combat the rise in online fraud, Sharjah Police have outlined several essential safety measures:

Use trusted websites: Always ensure you are interacting with verified, official websites when sharing personal information or making financial transactions.

Verify sources: Double-check the legitimacy of any website or communication before providing sensitive details.
Report suspicious activities: If you encounter suspicious online behaviour, immediately report it to Sharjah Police via their emergency number, 901.

Stay informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest fraud tactics to better protect yourself and others.

Community involvement
The Police have called on the public to work together in identifying and reporting fraudulent websites and online scams. Community cooperation plays a vital role in identifying and removing these threats, helping to protect everyone from future harm.
